  • Leafy and shaded valley site among the Sierra de Gredos mountains
  • Paragliding, horse riding, canoeing and more organised locally
  • Kid-friendly social park with outdoor pools and sports courts
Just under four kilometres from Mombeltrán and 500 metres above sea level, Prados Abiertos’ verily lovely valley setting in the Ávila province, among the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, is one that outdoorsy types will probably fall head over heels with. You’re right in the middle of the popular walking, cycling and horse riding route through the Barranco de las Cinco Villas (‘Ravine of the Five Villas’) and an hour’s drive from the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park, and various activities such as horse riding, tandem paraglide flights and canoe excursions are all within easy reach and organised by expert local operators. In or beside the large lifeguarded outdoor pool is where it’s likely you’ll be whiling away most of your on-site downtime, but for when you require an activity of a slightly drier nature, the badminton, pétanque, padel and tennis courts provide ample opportunity for some wholesome active fun. When the kids aren’t splashing around in the specially designated small-persons’ pool, they can swing, slide and squeal to their hearts’ content over at the play area and football pitch, and basketball tournaments are organised in high season at the miniature basketball court for an extra splash of fun. The restaurant, bar and takeaway service has your siteside eats well sorted, and if you’d rather go ahead and prepare your own fodder, then you can pick up bits at the grocery store for that too. Among the amenities are three sanitary blocks with toilets and hot showers (one adapted for those guests with reduced mobility), as well as a washing-up area and laundry room. A wifi service is also available.

Local attractions

Heaps of bridlepaths and waymarked forest hiking and cycling routes crisscross the area that surrounds the site, and several ponds, gorges and natural river pools are dotted around too; the site has tons of info on all this, so just ask one of the friendly Prados Abiertos team to recommend their fave local picks. For something slightly more adrenalised, several companies in the local area organise active pursuits around the locale too, such as horse riding excursions, canoe trips on the Tiétar river, tandem paragliding flights and guided mountain bike tours. The castles of Castle of Don Álvaro de Luna and Mombeltrán (both within 10 kilometres) are sure to sate the historian in you, and if you’d like to delve a little further into the past of this smashing Spanish province, you can elect to go on a guided tour at Mombeltrán to get a bit more out of your visit.
