  • Costa de la Luz beaches 20 minutes’ drive; Cadiz 45 minutes
  • Outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and sun loungers; dogs welcome
If you've been longing for warm, convivial hospitality, excellent tapas and maybe a little flamenco music, Andalusia may well draw you like a powerful magnet. And to add a bit of alfresco comfort to your stay in this southern Spanish region, consider a glamping break at Nomaddicts. A peaceful adults-only site shaded by tall trees, Nomaddicts is a 15-minute drive from the hilltop town of Vejer de la Frontera, where there are tapas bars aplenty, plus traditional taverns where you can listen to flamenco guitars and maybe learn a dance step or two… Guests here can chill out in the outdoor pool (around which are lots of sun loungers and seagrass umbrellas) or in the hot tub, and meet fellow guests at the bar, where the conversation might include swapping tips on the best dog walks in the surrounding area, such as the Sendero Ruta Ribera de La Oliva (10 minutes’ drive) or the Ruta Monte Quebradas (15 minutes). Be aware that you might have to keep your dog on a lead on these walks. Of course, you might also discuss the best beaches. The Costa de la Luz is a 20-minute drive away, and its sandy stretches include Playa del Carmen, in Barbate, with a bustling promenade lined with restaurants and bars, and quiet Playa de la Hierbabuena, fringed by vegetation-covered cliffs and popular with windsurfers. Meanwhile, sunset-chasers head west to places like Playa Punta Lejos. And if you stay at this beach until sunset, it should become clear why they call this coastal stretch the Coast of Light – it's rather spectacular.

Local attractions

Art enthusiasts should not miss Fundación NMAC (15 minutes’ drive), a large open-air museum where sculptures and installations sit within a forest of Mediterranean pines. Highlights include Marina Abramovic’s contemplative caves, carved into the walls of a quarry, and a ceramic bridge decorated with Moorish motifs. The Trafalgar Lighthouse (25 minutes), at the tip of the Cabo Trafalgar headland, was built in 1860, more than half a century after the historic battle that took place just off this coast. Take in the views, then head east to visit the Fábrica Romana de Salazones, the remains of a Roman-era food-processing plant. Get lost in the Old Town of Cádiz (45 minutes), using the 18th-century Torre Tavira to orient yourself. When you get to the tower, check out the views from the top or its Camera Obscura. The waterfront Castillo de Santa Catalina houses exhibitions, while Baluarte de la Candelaria (a 17th-century defensive structure) organises concerts and other events.
