  • Quiet touring pitches in the village of Los Albaricoques
  • A 20-minute drive from the beaches of Cabo de Gata
  • Close to an area used for lots of 1960s film sets
Fancy strolling through a spaghetti western set, following in the footsteps of megastars like Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood? Get along to Camper Park Olivares, just outside the village of Los Albaricoques, and you can do just that (albeit trundling along in a campervan rather than clattering into town on horseback…) Yes indeed, such famed films as A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More were shot not in the Wild West but here in Andalusia, and the local village still has pics and posters from around that time to peruse as you saunter around. The place isn’t just for show, however – it’s also a handy place to pick up food supplies in the shop or settle in to sample local wares at a restaurant or tapas bar. Long gone are the days of shootouts and bar brawls – the surrounds are much more peaceful these days, and this site is well placed for walks (directly from the gate, and with a dog at your heels if you’ve brought one), beach days at Cabo de Gata and all sorts of watersports including diving, snorkelling and kayaking. The facilities are a far cry from the sort of thing you’d have found here in the 1960s too – guests have access to a launderette, free wifi, drinking water, electric hookups and modern bathrooms with showers to hose off that desert dust.

Local attractions

There may not be much filming going on in the area now, but you can certainly see what it would once have been like (or make your own flick?) at Rodalquilar (20 minutes’ drive), a disused mine turned film set. Need a stand-in desert for your plotline? Seek out the spiky plants at Cactus Nijar (20 minutes); the town's butterfly farm makes another good stop while you're in the vicinity. Proper sandy beach more your style? Head south for 20 minutes or so to get to the beaches of Cabo de Gata – Mónsul, Genoveses and Fabriquilla are some of the top picks. If you like to mix up a bit of activity and a bit of beach, get the hiking boots on to ramble through the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park to one of the lesser-visited coves or beaches. There’s more beach over in Almería (half an hour), and it’s also a good place to sort sea-based activities including scuba diving, snorkelling, boat trips and sea kayak outings. If you can, leave a bit of time to explore the Alcazaba fortress (the second-largest Moorish construction in Spain, surpassed only by Granada’s Alhambra).
