It's all about the beach at WeCamp Cabo de Gata, where the deep blue waters and rocky vistas of the Andalusian coastline are never more than a few steps away. Located in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a protected area home to tons of wildlife, this well-kept site is about a kilometre outside the seaside village of Las Negras, a peaceful spot with restaurants, ice cream stands and a traditional whitewashed windmill. You won't need to do any driving here if you're after places to swim or surf – the mix of sand and shingle spots between the site and the village have plenty of quiet areas where you can settle down for some sunshine. Undersea diving is also highly recommended, and in the high season site staff are on hand to kit you out with scuba equipment and sort initial training. WeCamp Cabo de Gata can also organise kayak rental, snorkelling and boat trips out to remote beaches that can’t be reached by land. Back at base, other leisure facilities include an outdoor pool, a kids' play area and open-air exercise machines. The park is well-equipped for practical needs too, with a restaurant, food shop, free wifi and a laundry room. The friendly staff at reception will be happy to help you settle into the local area, but for more detailed itineraries or maps you may want to head to the nearest tourist information centre in Rodalquilar (10 minutes' drive).

Liked: Ho amato la location a due passi da cala del Cuervo che è davvero stupenda, con la sua acqua cristalli a e pulitissima e i pesci che nuotano vicino a riva. Il campeggio è bello e curato per quel che riguarda le aree comuni

Liked: Booked last minute, reception was efficient and very friendly. Shop was well stocked and bread could be ordered for the following day. Restaurant was lovely. Wifi was available throughout the site. Pools and beach were immaculate and always somewhere to rest. A small part of the beach, sheltered by boulders was a nudest area. The people were very discrete.

Disliked: Small pitch, we had to get creative when putting up the driveaway awning. One of the pools was heavily chlorinated, but we just popped into the other pools or the beach.

Liked: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, wir kamen nie an diesen schönen Ort an.

Disliked: Tja weil wir wurden in Frankreich an der Raststätte ausgeraubt. Und von Ihnen haben wir keine zurück Erstattung des Anzahlungspreis erhalten. Nur einen 2zeiler wo nur spanisch nicht viel positives drin stand.

Liked: Der Platz ist im Allgemeinen nicht schlecht.

Disliked: Unser Stellplatz war zu eng (4m breit) kein anderer frei. Nachbarn waren Nachts bis 2 Uhr sehr laut. Unser Hinweis wurde mit lachen und noch lauter feiern erwidert! Rezeption angesprochen mit Hinweis wir reisen sonst früher ab. Es wurde schlimmer und lauter. Sind dann 2 Tage später entnervt abgereist. Geld gab es nicht zurück - wir sollen uns an Pitchup wenden. Auf unserem Stellplatz lagen Zigarettenkippen und Plastikmüll. Der angepriesene Strand war eine Müllhalde. Die Zufahrt über den Berg ist für Womo über 5m schon gefährlich. Wir haben schon viele Plätze in Europa gesehen. Dieser war von der Lage, Zufahrt und Umgebung der absolut schlechteste. Schade da wir bisher nur sehr gute Erfahrungen mit Pitchup hatten. Bisher stimmte die Beschreibung immer aber hier völlig daneben.

Local attractions

Rodalquilar (10 minutes' drive) is a good place to start when you venture away from Las Negras – with its gold mines, botanical garden, castle and viewpoints, there's something in this small town to keep most visitors interested. Next up is Agua Amarga (30 minutes), where fine sandy beaches and the Mesa de Roldán lighthouse and hiking area make for thoroughly decent days out. Leave the coast behind and head inland to explore the desert-like landscapes around Níjar (30 minutes), where you can pick up artisan-made souvenirs at one of the town's small-scale ceramics factories, take a turn round a spectacular cactus garden, visit the town's museum or hike up to an old watchtower for far-reaching views over the surrounding area. Once you've seen a bit of town and country, head to Almería city (50 minutes) for more urban days out. With a cathedral, Spanish Civil War caves and a 10th-century fortress to its name, this place is quieter than many Andalusian cities but still has a lot of historic attractions to explore, plus big-city shopping opportunities at Mediterráneo shopping centre.
