  • Central amenities, general store, curio shop and management 24/7
Between national park and nature reserve, deep in the wildflower country of Namaqualand... you might feel like singing when you see the setting of Kroon Lodge in the Northern Cape. The comfy, clean and nicely convenient accommodation here is five minutes' drive from Kamieskroon, right bang central in Namaqualand among the foothills of the Kamiesberge. It's 20 minutes' drive to the Namaqua National Park and 45 minutes to Springbok and the hiking, cycling and mountain biking of the Goegap Nature Reserve; a brightly excellent option from here too is taking a four-wheel drive trip to the diamond mines of South Africa's north-west coast. Take a look at the pics to see the scenic setting and well-placed facilities of this nifty site: guests have access to a central amenities block with showers and toilets, as well as washing-up sinks and a coin-operated washing machine. A bathroom is in the ladies' block. Drinks, firewood, sweets and braai packs are all available at the shop; there's a curio shop at reception too for arts, crafts, books and souvenirs. Management live on the premises and are available 24 hours a day.

Local attractions

Kroon Lodge's surrounding area of Namaqualand, spreading over South Africa and Namibia for 1,000 kilometres around the west Atlantic coast, is famed for its wildflowers in spring (between August and October). Hiking and 4x4 trails and routes run along the coast and the banks of the Orange River, the longest river in South Africa. Flower fans should also take at least one trip to the Namaqua National Park, which has a higher concentration of plants than any other arid region in the world: over 1,000 flowery species of the park's 3,500 or so are found only here on all the planet. Native wild animals including hartebeest, oryx and springbok were reintroduced to the park in 2002. When you're moving on from Kroon, the coast at Hondeklip Bay and the border with Namibia are both about an hour and 45 minutes' drive away; a popular stopoff on the way to Namibia is Springbok, 45 minutes to the north.
