- Stay on a family-friendly working farm in the stunning Karoo region
- A 20-minute drive from spectacular Three Sisters hikes
- On-site swimming pool to cool down during hot summer months
Vast open spaces, spectacular African sunsets and dry desert air… sounds fab, right? Then head straight to Joalani Guest Farm, a family-friendly site a little over half an hour's drive from the village of Murraysburg and less than an hour from the town of Richmond in South Africa’s Western Cape.
In the Karoo (a semi-desert region of plains and mountains, scattered scenic towns and fossils galore), Joalani Guest Farm is well placed for explorations of this natural expanse: the site is a 20-minute drive from the mountainous Three Sisters, where there are plenty of trails to break your hiking boots in on and where the eagle-eyed might be lucky enough to spot meerkats or larger game.
The site is on a working farm, so there’s loads of room to spread out when you’re ready to relax. During the hot desert summers, you’ll be glad of the swimming pool for a cooling dip, and kids will have lots of space for playing in the large garden.
There’s a fully equipped self-catering kitchen when you’re ready to start your eats, or you can get something cooking over the braai (nab a braai pack from the team). Chow down sitting next to the campfire and turn your gaze skywards – this is a top spot for clear skies stargazing, so make the most of it.

Local attractions
Once traipsing through the scenic Three Sisters region is dispensed with, make immediate tracks for Beaufort West: it’s the largest town in the Karoo, and a top jumping-off spot for further exploration. You could sign up for a historical walking tour, donkey cart tour or fossil excursion, strap on your helmet for an adrenaline rush on the Hillandale MTB route, and pay a visit to the Christiaan Barnard museum (to learn more about the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant), before heading out of town to Karoo National Park for hiking trails, birding safaris and the chance to spot zebras and lions.
Craving more urban escapes from the desert? Pile into the car on a trip to Richmond (50 minutes away) for mountain biking routes, the Richmond Horse Museum and a poke around the Modern Art Project gallery, or venture to Hanover instead (an hour’s drive) for more mountain biking routes and museums. After something different? Head out to Driekoppen Farm to visit some weirder exhibitions: the Rugby Addict and the Spider Lady (arachnophobes should prob avoid the latter…).
For a day a little closer to home base, travel the 35 minutes to Murraysburg village, where you can spend a few hours fly fishing with the Sneeuberg Aquatic Conservancy club or stay in the car for the spectacular Sneeuberg Scenic Route.
