Want to spend your hols exploring every square inch nearby? Whether you’re a rambler, cycler, mountain biker or petrol head, you’ll find somewhere worth visiting at Ukholo Lodge, a site 20 minutes’ drive from the town of Citrusdal in Western Cape, South Africa.
Ukholo Lodge is a top spot for exploring the Fynbos, the Cederberg mountains and this part of the Western Cape. There are loads of trails starting nearby that hikers, bikers and off-road drivers will be psyched to get their teeth into: start with the Marcuskraal 4x4 trails, less than five minutes from the site, then head a little further afield for mountain bike trails and walking routes into the Cederbergs.
This can be a lush part of the country, and the nearby town of Clanwilliam is part of the Cape Flower Route, so expect spectacular colours if you visit at the right time of the year. And remember, this isn’t called the Citrusdal valley for nothing: there are tons of orange orchards nearby, including the one that surrounds you on site.
Back at Ukholo Lodge, cool off in the pool, relax among the greenery or trip across the road to fish in the Olifants river, then slip over to the on-site restaurant for a bite to eat. If you’d prefer to look after yourself, you can fire up the barbecue – piled high with goodies from the local markets – or make your way to one of the many restaurants in Clanwilliam and Citrusdal.

Local attractions
The nearby towns of Citrusdal and Clanwilliam are musts during your stay at Ukholo Lodge. Not only are they full of shops, restaurants, bars and museums, but there are markets and farm stalls to poke around, and you can climb aboard a donkey tour in Clanwilliam to see the area at a slower pace than usual.
There’s no shortage of walking trails near the site, but there are also a few a little further afield that are worth making an excursion for. If you can only do one, do the Sevilla rock art trail, 50 minutes’ drive from the site, which stretches five kilometres along the Brannewyn river and brings you to rock art paintings left behind by the San people.
After all that hiking and wandering, slake your thirst with well-deserved stops at Piekenierskloof Wine Company and Tierhoek (tastings by appointment) 20 minutes from Ukholo Lodge, or have a few sips of the highest altitude wines in South Africa at Cederberg wines and brewery, just over an hour away.
