It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious stays on a working Karoo sheep farm in a malaria-free area
- Just off the N12, halfway between the Cape Peninsula and Gauteng
- Swimming hole, tennis court, braai facilities, walking/cycling trails
Speeding through South Africa on a road trip? Rooidam Campsites, just off the N12 and halfway between the Cape Peninsula to the west and Gauteng to the east, is a choice well worth checking out for an overnight stop.
This peaceful park on a working Karoo sheep farm is also a prime place to pause for a day or two if you’re enroute to Port Elizabeth in the south or Namibia to the north (about five hours’ drive from either). A kilometre from the main road, it’s also easy for large caravans, low-profile cars and road bikes to access.
The central location, around 10 minutes from Britstown, isn’t the only thing to draw you in, however: this malaria-free park also has ample space for wandering, along with trails for jogging and mountain biking. Activities-wise, there’s a kilp dam for wild swimming and a clay tennis court for getting your game on.
The ambience on base is also mighty peaceful, and the rural setting means birdwatching and stargazing are both stellar here.
Before settling in to gaze at the night’s sky, embrace a South African tradition by investigating the braai facilities. Each pitch also has a small kitchenette with a single-plate gas burner, as well as a tree for shade, a standard three-point electric plug, and a private bathroom with a toilet, warm shower and a basin.

Local attractions
The area around this site isn’t packed full of things to do – it’s in a rural sort of location where hiking and biking are your main forms of entertainment. It’s also a fab stopover spot enroute to destinations further afield, including the especially scenic Cape Peninsula around Cape Town (7.5 hours’ drive).
The smaller settlement of Bloemfontein is four hours east and a top place for a quick look around one of the country’s three capital cities on your way to the mountain-studded enclave of Lesotho (8.5 hours). If you’re driving from south to north instead, consider starting off at Port Elizabeth (5.5 hours) before navigating north the same distance to Namibia’s sprawling deserts, world-class safari parks and spooky Skeleton Coast.
If vast landscapes are most definitely your thing, a destination slightly closer by is the 12,000-hectare Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve (an hour and 45 minutes). Spend days here watching out for wildlife including white rhino, Cape buffalo and blue cranes, the latter being South Africa’s national bird.
