  • Swimming pool, shared firepit and lots of space for kids to play
Animal encounters galore await for guests at Harriets Venture, a small and peaceful Limpopo site that's part of a scenic farm at the foot of the Kransberg mountains. Stay here and you'll be sharing the space with the resident impala, nyala and blesbok. And beyond the fence is the marvellous Marakele National Park, which you can access via the entrance gate six kilometres away for game drives and more wildlife spotting. You’ll only be about 10 minutes' drive from the town of Thabazimbi (a handy source of food shops, fuel stations and places to eat) but you’ll most likely feel a world away from any sort of urban space while you're on site. And a lot of that is down to the views, which look up to the mountain peaks (at their very best at sunset, when a whole palette of colours spreads across the rock faces). By night, of course, you should have some great displays of stars overhead, too (clouds permitting). And there’s also the campsite itself, which has plenty of trees for shade and privacy, and lots of space for kids to play in the open air. Pitches are nicely spacious too, so you can get yours set up just as you want it – and you'll have access to an electric connection and a fully equipped ablution block (both powered by solar energy). To keep cool on warm days, you’ll have access to the nearby house pool (100 metres away) on request; later in the day, head to the shared firepit area to cook up a braai and chat to your fellow guests.

Local attractions

If you're only going to make one outing, it should of course be to the Marakele National Park – the entrance gate is less than 10 minutes' drive away, and it’s well populated with birds and game animals. Once you’re in, you can take a lovely scenic drive on a fully tarred road to the Lenong viewpoint – a fabulous spot for a scenic picnic. You’ll probably spot plenty of wildlife as you tour the park, but if you want to get a bit closer the place to go is Marakele Animal Sanctuary (five minutes' drive). Here you can see leopards, cheetahs, tigers and hyena up close, and finish off with a trip into the lion enclosure (with the excellent LionMobile experience). Away from the animals, you may like to take the kids for a dip and a play on the waterslides at Kameeldoring Oasis (10 minutes); there's also a pool and playground at the Khaya Kwa Restaurant and Bar, opposite the national park entrance.
