  • Smart, easily accessed resort 25 minutes' drive from Hammanskraal
  • Next to the Dinokeng Game Reserve for game drives and balloon flights
  • Smart restaurant on site with breakfasts and home-smoked meats
Safari, swims and steaks – all sorted at Ngata Safari Lodge, a family-run Gauteng site handily placed 25 minutes’ drive from the centre of Hammanskraal. First up, the safari (that’s what you’ve come to these parts for after all...). That’ll be right next door in the Dinokeng Game Reserve; the Big Five all hang out here so prep your binoculars and cameras for glimpses of (fingers crossed) elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions and leopards. You can drive your own vehicle if you’re up for it, but a much better plan is to have the folk on site hook you up with a guided game drive (thus leaving your eyes free for animal spotting rather than keeping them on the trail). By their very nature game drives have a tendency to leave folk a tad warm and dusty (and happy) so it’s handy that all guests on site have access to showers to hose themselves down and an outdoor pool to plunge into for cooling off. And so to the steak (or the ribs, or the seafood). Owner Carl’s a bit of a foodie, so he devotes plenty of attention to providing tasty meals for guests, be they meats treated with his own secret seasoning and stashed in the smoker, or fresh salads, pizzas or all sorts of other treats. The restaurant staff also serve up a range of breakfasts and run a coffee shop.

Local attractions

You’ve come for the big animals and Dinokeng Game Reserve next to the site is a splendid place to spot them. Bring your own wheels along if you like – there’s a self-drive route to follow, but you’ll have to pick up a permit and promise not to stray from the prescribed trail (for the safety of both yourselves and the beasts you’re off in search of). Guided game drives are certainly preferable (apart from anything else they come with expert spotters so you max your chances of seeing the creatures) and you can sign up for them on site. If you’re up for a different mode of travel, join a guided mountain bike tour or take to the skies on a hot air balloon or microlight flight. If there’s anything you didn’t manage to spot, you’ll have much better odds at the Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Wildlife Park (25 minutes’ drive). Satisfied with all you’ve seen? Head down to Cullinan (50 minutes) to visit the diamond mine and adventure park or chill out with your safari memories while being pampered at the spa 20 minutes’ drive away.
