  • Peaceful site next to a five-kilometre beach on the Agate Terrace
  • Half an hour's drive from whale watching in Port St Johns
  • Close to popular hiking, fishing and birdwatching spots
Chirpy little chaps are geckos… and hopefully so you will be too while staying at Geckos Place, a fably peaceful place at the end of the Agate Terrace on South Africa’s Wild Coast. You’ll need to make sure you’ve got decent wheels at your disposal, for the half-hour drive from Port St Johns ends with you winding your way along a seven-kilometre gravel road. At the end lies your reward – a secluded spot next to a long sandy beach, with heaps of space to relax among the trees that fill the tropical gardens. Birdwatchers take note: those trees are popular with rare Cape parrots as well, so you’d do well to bring your binoculars along for your stay here. Fishing kit and walking shoes are wise choices for the packing list too, as there are some tiptop angling spots along the shore and lots of fab hikes to be done in the surrounding forests and along the coast. It’s the natural surroundings that are foremost around here, so facilities have been kept to the essentials, but there’s a clean bathroom block that’s got toilets and showers. Barbecues are welcome, with supplies available at shops over in Port St Johns (perhaps pick up a few drinks while you’re there too – the garden here is a splendid spot for sea-view sundowners).

Local attractions

Beach time… yes please. Those seeking secluded seaside time well away from the crowds will find much to please around here (they don’t call it the Wild Coast for nothing...). You can stroll down to the sands in a mere few minutes from the site, or hike your way over to Poenskop in an hour or so for a gorgeously isolated beach that’s well known locally as a place to snag fish. When it’s time for a bit more human interaction, it’ll take you half an hour or so to drive over to Port St Johns to tee off at the town’s golf club, join canoe trips on the Umngazana river or board whale-watching or photographic safari boat trips from the harbour. Just beyond Port St Johns (45 minutes from Geckos), Silaka Wildlife Reserve is another excellent place for a hike – there’s more gorgeous beach along the edge, and a sizeable resident wildlife population that includes zebra, wildebeest and lots of colourful birds.
