Want to spend your hols having a few thrilling adventures?
Adrenaline junkies and explorers should make like a river and flow along to Old Mill Drift Guest Farm, a family- and pet-friendly site in the Maluti mountains, half an hour’s drive from the small towns of Clarens and Fouriesburg in the Free State region of Central South Africa.
There’s plenty to do within the 666 hectares of land attached to Old Mill Drift: get your adrenaline pumping on the 4x4 obstacle course or with some off-roading, explore the Maluti mountains on foot, bike or horseback, or go tubing or fishing on the Caledon river, which follows the edge of the site along the border with Lesotho. (If you do want to venture off site, head to Clarens or Fouriesburg for museums, galleries, castles and breweries.)
Kick back in the evenings next to the firepit while your dinner cooks on the braai, soaking in the views before turning your eyes to the skies for some top-notch stargazing. If you’d prefer a break from cooking, there are plenty of restaurants within 30 minutes of Old Mill Drift.

Local attractions
Start your stay at Old Mill Drift Guest Farm in a peaceful way, with a morning’s golf at Clarens Golf and Leisure Estate, 30 minutes’ drive from the site, followed by an afternoon tipping around the town of Clarens before stopping in at Clarens Brewery for some locally brewed beers and ciders. If you’ve got plenty of time before returning to the site, travel out to Schlaaplaats Farm to see some bushman paintings – the san rock art here is well worth viewing.
Exploring the small town of Fouriesburg is a must: make your way to Walibri Art Glass for glassmaking lessons and workshops, then clamber up to the modern-build Destiny Castle for a poke around (and stunning views over the surrounding countryside).
You’re well placed for getting out in nature too, as Golden Gate Highlands National Park is about 40 minutes from Old Mill Drift. Turn your wheels this way for canoeing, abseiling, hiking and biking trails and the Basotho Cultural Village, and keep your eyes peeled for springbok, zebra and cape vultures.
