  • Family campsite by the side of Lake Velenje in the Šaleška Valley
  • A 20-minute drive to Varpolje, and 25 minutes to Funpark Menina
  • Watersports, hiking and cycling from site; restaurant and play area
Roll up outdoorsy types, for Camp Velenje borders Lake Velenje in the mountain-ringed Šaleška Valley; from the site you have direct access to windsurfing and paddleboarding, hiking and cycling… and that’s before you hear about the fishing, sailing and climbing facilities nearby as well. Yes, Camp Velenje makes a handy base for active families, but equally, if you’re after a relaxing break doing very little at all, then it’s easy to grab a deckchair by the lake and snooze in the sun. Spread over 7.5 acres of woodland and fields, the site has grass pitches partly or totally shaded by trees, and each has access to electricity and direct proximity to drinking water. Hire watersports gear and book tuition at Zoo Station down by the lake. Try your hand at windsurfing or paddleboarding – take the latter one step further by joining yoga classes on your board. If you’d care to explore the surrounding area, reception staff can organise expert hiking and cycling guides for bespoke tours. A word of advice here: if you’re cycling, take the electric-bike option as the region is pretty hilly. Overdone it on the sporting front? Get rid of any muscle aches with a soothing massage back at the site. Hungry after all your exercise? Tuck into the à la carte menu at the terrace restaurant as you admire the views of Lake Velenje. Right next-door is a large kids’ playground, allowing parents to keep an eye on their progeny while downing a decent cup of coffee.

Liked: Beautiful setting by the lake. Very clean showers/toilets. No set pitches, so pick where you want to be.

Disliked: Not enough hook up points. Had to move from chosen spot, couldn't connect at first. Site resident on camp didn't like us moving next to them, walked straight through our set up to washrooms, could have walked round. Just being awkward. Put up breaker, soon stopped that.

Disliked: Zaun zwischen Gelände und See. Wurde vorher nicht kommuniziert. Sehr laute Baustelle unmittelbar neben den Stellplätzen. Fahrradverleih sehr teuer.

Liked: Proximity to the lake for swimming and water sports, on-site restaurant and other eating options close by. Friendly staff. A much more relaxed vibe outside of the weekend period. Some good cycling and hiking trails direct from the site or within a short distance.

Disliked: Proximity to the lake - the weekend features a party vibe with loud DJ music and other pumped out "noise" from the various attractions. Great if you're a local teenager less so if you are on the campsite looking for a relaxing holiday. Toilet and shower facilities were insufficient for the volume of people over a weekend, the showers were poorly drained with dirty water running in to adjacent cubicles. The website description and photos are misleading, there is nowhere near enough shade so most pitches would be in full or partial sun. An inadequate amount of electrical hook-ups, cables running long distances trailing across roads and walkways. Pitches are not properly delineated so can get cramped and there is little to no privacy provided by hedging or suchlike. A long way from town or any other attractions.

Local attractions

As well as all sorts of watersports on the lake, tennis, beach volleyball, football and horse riding are all to be found within 10 minutes’ drive of Camp Velenje. Anyone looking for more adrenaline-inducing pursuits should head for Varpolje (20 minutes’ drive) for paragliding – tandem or solo – at sunset, canyoning and whitewater-rafting on the Savinja River. Family adventures include zorbing, zipwires and bushcraft lessons at Funpark Menina (25 minutes). For a more leisurely day out, pick up a picnic from Velenge supermarkets (five minutes) and head for the colourful botanic gardens at riverside Mozirski gaj (15 minutes), where you can picnic by the Savinja and tour traditional wooden Slovene farmhouses, windmills and cottages. Staying closer to Lake Velenge, learn about local industrial heritage through displays of machinery and guided tunnel tours at The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia, catch an open-air concert at Vista Park (both 15 minutes’ walk) or climb up to its viewing platform to admire the lake fringed by mountains.
