  • Fairytale-themed family-friendly site in large swathe of woodland
  • A 15-minute drive from Ryazan and five minutes from indoor waterpark
  • Restaurant, playground, miniature zoo, saunas and high ropes course
When planning hols for the whole family, your ears might perk up at the mention of a fairytale theme for kids, saunas for grownups, and lots more that everyone can enjoy. Listening hard? Make your way to V Nekotorom Tsarstve, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Polyany in the Ryazan Oblast. When the kids are in tow, the site’s play areas should keep them handily distracted during site-based days. With playgrounds, trampolines, a miniature zoo and a high ropes course to bounce around, weekdays are sorted, and it’s all ramped up at the weekend when craft workshops and kid-friendly activities are added to the mix. While kids are distracted, grownups can sidle off to unwind in one of the traditional Russian saunas with outdoor plunge tubs. When it’s time for the whole family to reunite, explores of the site’s fairytale theme come highly recommended, from the statues of Chernomor bogatyrs (knights errant) to the pretty lakeside 'town'. Evenings here are well spent mingling at the gazebo and seating areas, playing board games, and getting campfires and barbecues on the go. If a night off from cooking is needed, there’s an on-site restaurant with traditional Russian and European foods on the menu, as well as a kids’ menu and extensive wine list, and the cheese shop and souvenir shop should sort everything else.

Local attractions

Stays hereabouts should certainly get started with a trip into the city of Ryazan, about 15 minutes’ drive from base (it's 25 minutes to the centre). Explores of the historic buildings of the Ryazan Kremlin are a must, as are visits to the Russian Circus, the city's spectacular cathedral, and museums dedicated to art, the Russian airforce and Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ivan Pavlov (and his dogs). In search of further adventures? The site’s just seven kilometres from an indoor year-round waterpark and 10 kilometres from a wakeboarding park – both handily reached by bikes, which you can hire on site. If further-flung adventures are on the cards, it’s three hours’ drive to Vladimir, a one-time Russian capital and one of the spectacular cities (full of UNESCO-listed sights) on Russia’s Golden Ring. It’s also just a little over three hours to current capital, Moscow, where visitors can wander the Red Square, visit Lenin’s Mausoleum, take in a performance of the Russian ballet at the Bolshoi, or simply gawp at all the spectacular architecture.
