  • Peaceful dog-friendly site in a rural area of the Carpathian Mountains
  • Mountain and waterfall walks nearby; museums half an hour's drive away
  • Partially covered terrace with an outdoor kitchen and café on site
Packing your bags for the Carpathians? The dog-friendly Camping Călătorul is certainly a spot you’ll want to circle on your trusty map. This peaceful site is in a rural area in the southern part of the Carpathian Mountains, up in the hills and surrounded by scenic forests and mountains. Imagine: peaceful mornings sipping a coffee on the site’s terrace, taking your time to admire the views. The terrace has an outdoor kitchen for those times when you feel like cooking up and consuming something more substantial in preparation for the day’s adventures. Next to the terrace is a coffee bar (for that aforementioned coffee, of course). These are well-maintained, modern facilities. The terrace is partly covered to keep off any rainfall when it passes over. There’s also a designated area for guests to build a firepit in the evenings and a modern sanitary block on site. Outdoorsy folks are in the right spot here. Your first (lengthy) walk might be to Cascada Săritoarea, which is under two hours’ walk away from the site. There are shorter and longer routes in the area if you’re wanting something a little easier or challenging. Once you’re adequately warmed up with the easier walks, the mountain of Buceș-Vulcan (20 minutes’ drive) might make for a more challenging trek. For snacks to keep you going on the way up, first take a drive to the nearest grocery shop, 15 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Liked: The campsite was really pretty and peaceful with a communal kitchen and fridge, as well as a coffee machine. The bathrooms were super clean and spacious and the showers were a nice pressure. There were lots of walks to do in the area too so great for people into hiking. The hosts themselves were super friendly and made an effort to socialise with the guests- it was also a very child friendly site as they had 2 small children themselves.

Disliked: There was a bit of barking at night although this is normal for Romania, and unfortunately I chose to park at the bottom of the hill where my car got stuck after some rain! I was told a level parking field is being constructed though so this won’t be a problem for much longer.

Local attractions

A little culture and history to start with? You’ll get plenty of that in Deva (an hour and five minutes’ drive), a city with museums, churches and a 13th-century hilltop citadel with views of the city. More on that note, Alba Iulia (an hour and 40 minutes) is one of the oldest Roman settlements in Romania. Roșia Montană (50 minutes) has Roman mining galleries and architecture. Then, there’s Hunedoara (an hour and 20 minutes), a city in the mountains with a castle and gorgeous mountain scenery. Museum hopping can be done closer to base too if you wish, starting with Muzeu Mineral Toda (25 minutes), which documents the evolution of local minerals from Hunedoara. Combine it with a visit to Gold Museum Brad (half an hour), which has over four kilograms of native gold found in the Metaliferi Mountains. An unusual sight, perhaps? The flooded church Geamana (an hour and 25 minutes) is part of an abandoned village flooded by toxic waste from a mining pit in 1978. Further afield, the Scărişoara Glacier Cave (two hours) is one of the biggest ice caves in the Apuseni Mountains.
