  • Colourful site 15 minutes’ drive from Peniche, on the Atlantic coast
  • Óbidos 25 minutes’ drive; Nazaré 45 minutes
  • Creative workshops; picnic tables; supermarket; launderette
Are you after golden beaches with good surfing action, cool urban art and maybe a game of golf accompanied by epic ocean views? All three await at Kampaoh Peniche, in the village of Ferrel, near Peniche (15 minutes’ drive). First of all, the main attraction: the reliably swelling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, which is a 15-minute walk away across an area of vegetation-covered dunes. Sandy expanses overlooked by dramatic cliffs include Almagreira Beach (five minutes) and Praia do Pico da Mota (10 minutes), while Praia Baleal - Sul (five minutes), to the west, is more sheltered and with (slightly) gentler waves. Daredevils (and those who enjoy watching them) head to Nazaré (45 minutes), which hosts an annual elite surfing competition. The site is filled with vibrant murals and contemporary art installations. And it’s not just about being a spectator here: guests are invited to take part in art workshops, so who knows what you might be inspired to create amid this gorgeous seascape? Speaking of which, there are incredible views of the ocean and the rugged coastline from Praia D’El Rey Golf Course (10 minutes), if golfing is your jam. Tents come with nice little touches – from electricity to a mosquito net, and from a portable fridge to all the bits and bobs you need for a picnic (including a picnic table). And in addition to a well-maintained toilet block with showers, there is also a launderette. The on-site supermarket might be all you need during your stay here, but this is prime seafood territory, and it would be almost criminal not to sample traditional local dishes in restaurants in Peniche.

Local attractions

On a spur jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, Peniche has a 16th-century fortress that now houses the Museu Nacional Resistência e Liberdade, with exhibits illustrating the resistance to the Fascist dictatorship, which ended as recently as 1974. There are spectacular views from the Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse, built in the late 18th century. Óbidos (25 minutes’ drive) is a hilltop town anchored by the forbidding Castelo de Óbidos, a medieval fortress with crenellated towers and battlements. You can also visit the ancient Aqueduto de Usseira and the Church of Saint Mary, which is decorated with splendid azulejo tiles. The Berlengas Nature Reserve (40 minutes by boat from Peniche, with daily services May–October) spreads over a three-island archipelago – uninhabited, except for myriad birds who nest here or stop for a rest during their migration. Seagulls abound, but keep your eyes peeled for puffins and shearwaters.
