- Eco-friendly camping near Praia da Salema surfing beach on the Algarve
- A 25-minute drive to Lagos; half an hour’s cycle to Figueira beach
- Restaurant, bar and eco-shop on site; surf boards and bike to hire
For a chance to up your green credentials while still enjoying a splendid seaside holiday, consider a stay at Salema Eco Camp, said to be the only carbon-neutral camping and glamping site on the Algarve. With a variety of well-kitted-out and boho accommodation, it’s near the fishing village of Salema in the Natural Park of Costa Vicentina, a five-minute drive from Praia da Salema beach.
The Costa Vicentina is known for its laidback vibe and reputation as a surfing haven. It's safe for kids to learn on gentle waves here and there's tuition available along the beach – plus you can hire surf boards at the campsite.
Amenities at the site include the Eco-Store, where you can source regional food and drinks for alfresco suppers as well as a few essentials. This is also a great place to pick up souvenirs, with a range of eco-sustainable and organic cosmetics, clothing, footwear and local crafts – some of which are displayed around the grounds.
For healthy breakfasts and outdoor dining with a refined touch, head for Nazari Restaurant (closed Tuesday) for top-flight local cuisine using seasonal Portuguese produce.
To explore the national park in an eco-friendly manner, hire a bike from the site. Staff members are also happy to organise yoga or tai chi classes, dolphin-spotting cruises and kayak tours among many other activities (for an extra cost).

Local attractions
For walkers, there are some spectacular coastal trails right from the campsite, including the Rota Vicentina and the Fisherman’s Trail, passing through Salema (five minutes’ drive) and giving access to secluded coves, remote clifftops and the bizarre limestone rock formations that Algarve beaches are famous for.
If you like to try a different beach every day, Costa Vicentina offers plenty of choice within a 30-minute bike ride, including expansive, sandy Figueira and quiet, untamed Boca do Rio (both 15 minutes’ cycle), Furnas (popular with naturists, 20 minutes) and Cabanas Velhas (half an hour), backed by striking red cliffs.
From this quiet corner of the Algarve, you can easily up the pace and head for one of the lively and pretty towns. Lagos (25 minutes’ drive) is known for its Moorish remains as well as its nightlife, while Portimão (40 minutes) has a bustling riverfront and marina to explore. If the kids need wearing out, take them to Slide and Splash Waterpark (35 minutes) or head inland to see monkeys and penguins at the Zoo de Lagos (15 minutes).
