  • Glamping stays in bell tents overlooking a lagoon and the ocean
  • A 10-minute drive to Vale de Lama beach and 20 minutes from Lagos
  • Pools, barbecue area, garden, tennis court and trampoline
Atlantic Ocean swims, Algarve beaches and Alvor lagoon kitesurfing – all three are within easy reach of Lama Glamping, a 20-minute drive away from the former maritime trading town of Lagos in southern Portugal. Venture towards this leafy site to take in the views as well as make the most of a top location: the bell tents each have a comfy outdoor lounging area overlooking a delta with the sea in the distance. A garden full of succulents is also at the park for wanders among greenery, and a couple of pools (including one for the smaller travellers) are set amid palm trees for daily dips in lush surroundings. If you’re up for some energetic exercise or keen for a go on the green, a tennis court is on hand as well and some of the Algarve’s best golf courses are less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Deciding how best to distract the kids while you grill up fresh produce like fish from the food shops in Lagos at the barbecue hut? Send them off to the trampoline or get your other half to supervise playtime at Vale de Lama beach less than a 10-minute drive away. The sands down on Meia Praia are also close by, taking about 15 minutes to reach. When it’s time to retire post-dins or explores, the tents on site fit the whole family as they come with double beds and extra single mattresses.

Local attractions

Always wanted to be flung across water while at the mercy of the wind? Try the increasingly popular sport of kitesurfing: lessons can be taken from a centre about a 25-minute drive away at the other side of the Alvor lagoon. For calmer times, Lagos has a walled Old Town to wander around where you can visit the 18th-century Santo António church and Castelo dos Governadores, a fine baroque castle, before walking over to the sandy Praia do Camilo cove reachable by a steep set of steps (about 30 minutes' walk or five minutes if you want to drive). The cliffside strolls around Ponta de Piedade headland are also worth it for the epic views… At your happiest when hiking? Head north and trek through the eucalyptus forest in Monchique (40 minutes) or turn east and take to the trails of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (an hour’s drive). While on this coast, surfing’s possible at beaches around Sagres (40 minutes), where deep-sea fishing trips from the harbour are also popular.
