- Simple site by the sea on Senja, 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle
- A 40-minute drive from hikes and fishing in Ånderdalen National Park
- Boats, snowshoes and ice fishing kit to hire; village café and museum
After adventures in the Arctic Circle? Pack your sledge and some hefty jumpers and set course for Skrolsvik Kystferie on the southern edge of Senja, a Norwegian island about 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
This small and simple site is right by the Norwegian Sea in the village of Skrolsvik, population 100 (small as it is, Skrolsvik has a museum devoted to the local fishing industry, that doubles up as a café and a gift shop).
Taking care of your other needs, the site's got all the kit to hire for year-round Arctic explorations: snowshoes and ice fishing equipment for winter visitors, as well as a traditional Sami shelter if you want to stay out late watching the Northern Lights. In the summer, hunters of the giant halibut can rent out powered boats for fishing trips, and with barbecues welcome back on site, there’s no excuse for not having a very big fish supper under the midnight sun...
Duly fuelled on fish, it’s time to see Senja. Pub quiz fans may have heard about the next village along: 10 minutes’ drive away, Å is blessed with the shortest place name on the planet. Stop for a photo enroute to Ånderdalen National Park, (accessible from Tranøybotn, 40 minutes away), a mix of Alpine coastal forest, fjords, lakes and lava fields that’s surprisingly well set up for day trip rambles and fishing excursions as well as serious hikes.
Trails are well marked and there are rest areas with shelters, fires and even logs and kettles for a mid-trek Nordic coffee break.

Local attractions
Once a mining town, Hamn (an hour and 20 minutes from base) has become a northerly holiday hotspot for all seasons. In the winter months, fjord safari boats take wildlife spotters out to meet seals, whales and sea eagles in the icy waters; in the summer, canoeists paddle the clear blue seas around the 98 offshore islands and cyclists pedal Route 86, one of Norway’s 18 National Scenic Routes past white sand beaches and saw-toothed mountain ranges.
By ferry from Skrolsvik you can reach the island of Hinnøya and its cultural hub Harstad in just over a couple of hours: the town's busy in summer months for its arts festival and networks of caves, scuba trips around the Belgica shipwreck and a burgeoning restaurant scene. It’s also got a waterpark buried deep inside a mountain… and you won’t see anything like that south of the Arctic Circle.
