- Fully-equipped rental accommodation, five minutes' drive from Rhenen
- Pool, paddling pool, pool bar, restaurant, bike hire, café and terrace
Woodland and scents... how sensible. Scenically set in a fragrant forest on the southern edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, Vakantiepark de Thijmse Berg is a family park with fully-equipped rental accommodation, five minutes’ drive from Ouwehand Zoo.
The site’s setting in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park within 15 minutes’ drive of the Utrecht Hill Ridge, the Veluwe and the Betuwe has it excellently placed for outdoor activities and adventures: set out on bike or by foot into the surrounding forests, scramble around the Utrecht hills or drive for 25 minutes or so to reach Hoge Veluwe National Park. The Kwintelooyen recreation area is five minutes’ drive away, by the site’s local town of Rhenen.
Vakantiepark de Thijmse Berg is firmly kid-friendly, running a full programme of entertainment and activities in high season as well as sorting outdoor and indoor play; parents are most welcome to come along to the latter for wifi and a free newspaper.
In between all that, facilities on site include a pool with water spray area; a paddling pool; a pool bar open in good weather, and an afternoon café and terrace making up a favoured stopoff point for passing hikers and cyclists. The café becomes a restaurant in the evening, dishing up dinners, snacks, drinks and ice cream… that’s all rather sensible too.
Bikes are available to hire on site.

Local attractions
Start from the site to get out hiking and biking past castles, heathland, sand drifts, a river and ancient forests in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, the second biggest forest area in the Netherlands at 10,000 hectares. There are five easy bike routes designed especially for families, as well as routes suitable pushchairs and wheelchairs.
To see the region via a little folly, drive 30 minutes to Monument Pyramide van Austerlitz, the famed lookout point built by Napoleon's soldiers on one of the highest parts of the Utrecht Hill Ridge (constructed because their general wanted to keep them occupied – true). There’s a visitor centre on site these days, telling the tale of French rule in the Netherlands.
More history can be delved into at Amerongen Castle 15 minutes away and at the National Military Museum (40 minutes) at Soest. For town and city sightseeing (and possibly cake), Arnhem is 30 minutes away and Utrecht 40.
