  • Family-friendly site in Limburg province, close to the German border
  • Gennep 10 minutes’ drive; ZooParc Overloon 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; a five-minute walk to the Niers for fishing and swimming
Fancy a holiday with one foot in the Netherlands and the other in Germany? (Not literally… but close enough.) Then book a spot at Minicamping de Niers, where only an agricultural field and the river Niers separate you from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The two-country theme will probably colour your entire stay at this family-friendly site in the Dutch village of Ven-Zelderheide, in Limburg province. You might decide to go hiking among the heathlands and sand dunes of De Maasduinen National Park (15 minutes’ drive) one day, then cross the border the next to explore the woodlands of the Klever Reichswald state forest (10 minutes). The same goes for restaurants: there are a couple of dining options on the edge of Ven-Zelderheide, plus more eateries in Ottersum (five minutes) and Gennep (10 minutes); or you can sample some traditional German fare in Kranenburg (10 minutes) and Kleve (15 minutes). Well-behaved canine companions are welcome at the site, which has spacious (and level) grass pitches separated by tall hedges, plus a toilet/shower block with a washing machine, and a drying room. A barbecue is provided, and there’s a washing-up area, too. A five-minute walk takes you to the river Niers, where you can fish for chub and barbel, launch a kayak or enjoy a wild swim. This being the Netherlands, there is also a huge network of cycle paths, making it easy to explore the area on two wheels.

Fully-serviced grass site

Sehr empfehlenswert

Disliked gar nichts, alles super!

Fazit: Wir kommen gerne einmal wieder

Liked + Freundlicher Empfang

Fully-serviced grass site

Liked It was a pleasure for us to be in this place. It was quiet, comfortable, close to the nature. In the morning the loudest sound was bird in front of the tent. Two separate bathroom one for ladies one for mens - clean and tidy. We didn't use electricity but we didn't want to. It's also washing machine (cost 2.5 euro).

Local attractions

When swimming in the Niers doesn’t quite cut it anymore, take the kids to Freizeitbad GochNess (five minutes’ drive), an aquatic park with an indoor pirate-themed toddlers’ pool and a larger outdoor pool with a waterslide. There is also a sauna area (plus pampering treatments) for stressed-out grown-ups. The Netherlands and Germany weren’t always the friends and allies they are today. In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the country, and the difficult period leading up to the liberation is explored at Vrijheidsmuseum (15 minutes), on the outskirts of the border town of Groesbeek. In Groesbeek, it is also possible to ride a bicycle train along a former railway all the way into Germany. Lions, giraffes and pygmy hippos are among the residents at ZooParc Overloon (25 minutes), where you can witness feeding sessions, pull yourself across a lake on a pontoon and let the kids burn some energy in the adventure playground.
