If looking for a site that ticks all (or at least most) of your boxes has started to feel a bit like a treasure hunt, it’s time to rejoice: you might have just found your trove. De Schatberg (literally, ‘the treasure mountain’) is a family-oriented site amid leafy greenery in the south of the Netherlands, a 20-minute drive west of Venlo.
The site’s watery attractions include both indoor (heated) and outdoor pools (both with waterslides), a child-friendly aquapark with shallow waters and spray games, and a pond for wild swimming and watersports (plus a beach for building sandcastles) – in other words, something for any age group. The kids also benefit from an outdoor playground and a vast indoor play area (the Play Forest) with climbing structures and inflatables. Not enough to keep your offspring entertained? They might like the organised activities – from scavenger hunts to craft workshops – arranged by the kids’ club.
As for the grown-ups, they can wind down on the banks of a fishing pond waiting for the big one to bite, or discover the surrounding area on two wheels; cycle hire is available on site, and the reception staff will be able to point you to the best local routes. There’s also plenty to do for your four-legged friend, including a dog park and a devoted section of the beach where they can play fetch in the water.
Two restaurants (one of them with views of the swimming lake and beach) serve schnitzels, burgers and pizzas, and the on-site supermarket sells most things – from freshly baked goods to bucket-and-spade sets.

Local attractions
FEC Sevenum (10 minutes’ walk) is a large indoor activity centre with a bowling alley, laser tag, escape rooms and a miniature golf course inspired by America’s Route 66. If you want to take the entertainment outdoors, head to Toverland (five minutes’ drive), with roller coasters and thrill rides.
If you’re into beer, at the Hertog-Jan brewery (25 minutes) you can go on a tour of the facilities (including the large copper brewing kettles) and the maturation cellar – not forgetting the chance to taste the golden nectar, of course.
At the Castle Gardens in Arcen (25 minutes), themed green areas spread around a 17th-century moated mansion. They include a bamboo forest, colourful dahlia and rhododendron gardens and a formal Italian-style garden with a pool. When the kids have had enough of staring at greenery, head to the Mountain Garden area, which comes with a miniature golf course.
