  • Limburg site with its own marina, next to a sandy lake beach
  • Easy access to borders with Belgium and Germany
  • Surfing, canoeing and wakeboarding lessons
When only a waterside stay will do, Jachthaven Camping de Maasterp is a topping spot, for it’s got its very own marina and lies right beside the 15-hectare Maasterp day beach, where safe family swims can be had and surfing, canoeing and wakeboarding skills can be polished and picked up with lessons for water babes of all ages. When an off-site explore is in order, walking and cycling trails are plentiful nearby, and within half an hour’s drive and east of Roermond is National Park De Meinweg, part of the German-Dutch border park Maas-Swalm-Nette; pootle over here for a walk up to Wolfs plateau and waterside ambles along the Roode Beek and Boschbeek rivers. Bordering the Dilkensplas nature reserve, Jachthaven Camping de Maasterp is in the green and scenic province of Limburg, and a short stroll into the village center of Ohé en Laak, making you excellently placed for all kinds of cultural and action-packed trips, to spots like Toverland theme park and its 30 indoor and outdoor rides and water attractions, the Marl caves and the wine cellars of nearby Château Neercanne. Pitchside days are fab and a lot of fun too with enough to do to keep energetic offspring amply occupied, from organised activities like craft and bingo games in the recreation room; to climbing and swinging at the playground; and ball games over on the multisports field. Also toppingly, lounge around at the lake beach, or take on a few expert tips with watersports lessons on the lake. When it comes to feeds and watering, a terrace brasserie is also on site for breaks between beach, sightseeing and site days, for scoffs while surveying your lush Limburg surrounds, across the lake, the marina and beyond. The site’s sanitary facilities are on top of the embankment, and include washrooms with coin-operated showers, gas bottle sales and a launderette.

Local attractions

Lots of topping outdoor options are what’s on offer in the locale: cycling and walking can be done around the local trails that lie nearby, with a six-kilometre rambling route that runs past the site, and a network of cycle routes that link up with others in Belgium and Germany. For cyclists, a passenger ferry accessed a mere kilometre away crosses the border to Belgium, and the German border is just 10km away, so it’s mightily easy to hop on your bike and bolt it into Belgium or pedal your way across the German border. Further afield, a couple of national parks in the vicinity, including De Groote Peel and Hoge Kempen, both within an hour’s drive. In the lakes around the site are all sorts of watery sports options like sailing, swimming, diving, canoeing and waterskiing and, also swimmingly, you can embark on a boat trip nearby to reach beaches, fishing spots and restaurants, while cultured and sightseeing days can be spent over in Maastricht and Eindhoven, both within easy reach by car. One for a wee tipple? Then head to the Marl caves, for the network of ancient passageways that throughout these spectacular caverns lead intrepid explorers to the famed wine cellars of Château Neercanne, once hewn from limestone to create a wondrous backdrop within which to sample some of the château’s most carefully chosen and verily lovely vintages.
