Camping de Breede sits in a regal position right next door to pretty Breedenborg Palace and a five-minute drive from the village of Warffum. Wander here along the canal or in the Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland museum, showcasing what Dutch life was like back in the mid-19th century. Swap history for animal antics at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen just over a 10-minute drive away, which looks after poorly marine mammals before releasing them back into the wild. Once you’ve learnt all there is to know about seals drive 25 minutes to the student city of Groningen, a lively locale thanks to its bars and clubs. Doing it on a day trip? The province's capital also has a handful of museums themed on maritime history, graphics and comics. Groningen’s also the gateway to the West Frisian islands for explores offshore using the ferry service from Lauwersoog, 25 minutes’ away from the site. Wanting more nature? The lake of Oldambtmeer is a 50-minute car ride for boat trips and roams beside the banks, while the Ennemaborg estate – also great for wanders – is 45 minutes away by car.
