Forget sorting madly through all your camping gear just before a trip – with Tent-OK at Camping 't Strandheem, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Opende, accommodation is fully set up ready for your arrival. That makes turning up and getting stuck into the facilities, including an indoor swimming pool and a miniature golf course, a breeze.
Activities and amenities at this park in the north Netherlands region of Groningen cater to smaller children, teens and their parents, with kids’ clubs, discos and covered play areas set up especially for the younger members of the clan.
If grownups are craving some chill time, just outside the site is a pretty lake with a beach – settle down here for the day or, if you’re feeling more active, mosey off into the surrounding countryside on boat and bike rides or into Groningen city (30 minutes’ drive).
The swish accommodation is just right for getting in your daily dose of R&R as well… The site’s spacious tents are tall enough to stand up in easily and are furnished with beds including mattresses (don’t forget to bring pillows and sleeping bags, though – bedding's not provided). Cooking equipment is set outside each unit, and mums and dads who aren’t fans of prepping meals while on a break can make a beeline for the snack bar or the on-site restaurant.

To tire out the tiddlers, organise games at the Bullet Factory paintball centre (20 minutes) or head off hiking and biking in De Alde Feanen National Park (25 minutes), stopping off at the Skûtsje Museum while you’re here to have a go at old-timey nautical activities like tying rope knots and hoisting bags onto boats.
Aquazoo Friesland (30 minutes) is another kid-friendly place in the region – roam over there to watch water-based mammals and birds in their habitats or investigate the insects et al at the DoeZoo Insektenwereld (40 minutes). On a guided tour, visitors can interact with the critters, whether they fancy touching the turtles or having spiders stroll up their arms.
Holidaying with a budding astronaut? The 18th-century Eise Eisinga Planetarium (40 minutes) – the oldest in the world – is the spot for starry surveillance, while small sailors might like to travel towards Ameland island from Holwerd to saunter around sand dunes or the car-free Schiermonnikoog island from Lauwersoog (both 40 minutes).
Rather not travel that far? Leekstermeer lake (20 minutes) is just as scenic and has watersports like canoeing and windsurfing to have a go at.
