- Rural site in the middle of meadows next to the Lettelberterdiep river
- A 20-minute drive from Groningen; boat and canoe rental available
- Sandpit, trampoline, go-karting, wifi and organic veg garden
And breathe… Aan Het Diepje, a green site just off a country road next to the Lettelberterdiep river, in the middle of meadows dotted with sheep and cows, is just the ticket for a restful break in Groningen province.
This site on the border with Drenthe is in a wildlife-rich area with not much to disturb you but egrets wandering through the fields, deer prancing about and birds of prey flying overhead in search of food. In fact, possibly the only time you’ll want to check your watch is to figure out if dusk’s about to fall – the sunsets are unmissable in this region.
But if you’re after activities to fill your days…? Boat and canoe rental is available from the park for coasting along on the Lettelberterdiep, maybe with a bit of fishing thrown in for good measure; hire a bike as well and cycle off on the Nienoord route starting right next to the park, or pedal to the city of Groningen, 13 kilometres away.
Back on base, a sandpit, trampoline, go-karting, outdoor toys and craft supplies are on standby to keep the kids busy while you make meals using organic produce from the vegetable garden and fresh eggs from the on-site chickens.
If cooking breakfast’s not part of your vibe on a hol, order the park’s in advance – you’ll need plenty of sustenance to get you through all those activities.
This park also has free wifi for mapping your wanders, as well as a shower block, toilet facilities and a washing-up area.

Local attractions
This centrally located park is in a top spot for day trips around Drenthe, Friesland and the Frisian Islands (boats leave about an hour’s drive away), but there's also plenty to keep you occupied close by.
Start off with birdwatching at De Lettelberterpetten observation hut, a haven for twitchers 10 minutes away, or dawdle to De Onlanden (25 minutes) and climb up to its manmade lookout point for sweeping views over the treetops.
Urban times are to be had in Groningen (20 minutes), which has classic Dutch architecture to admire, including the Grote Markt square’s age-old Martinitoren clock tower and the gothic Martinikerk church with its frescoes and baroque organ.
For modern ways to spend your time, the cutting-edge contemporary art of the Groninger Museum is worth a punt, as is the Northern Maritime Museum to learn about the region’s shipbuilding and shipping past.
