Like a bit of variety on your holiday? Camping De Veenborg is in one of those locations where you can mix and match your activities as you go along – this well-placed site is surrounded by greenery on the edge of the village of Hoogezand, and about 15 minutes’ drive from Groningen. That setting means you’ll have easy access to lots of walking and cycling trails for days when you fancy keeping it rural, but you’ll also not have to travel far when you feel like visiting a museum or dipping into the city’s café culture. The area is generously supplied with historic sights, amusement parks and other attractions too – so you should have plenty of options to fill your break, whether you’re on a short stopover or settling in for a little longer. Whichever approach you choose, you’ll be staying on large well-drained pitches that have plenty of space to relax, cook dinner on your barbecue, have a couple of drinks and look up into the clear starry skies by night. Dogs and kids are welcome, with a playground to keep the latter entertained for a while. The emphasis here is on peace and space rather than lots of noisy activities, so the site has just simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers, wifi and a chemical disposal point. Shops and places to eat are about 10 minutes’ bike or bus ride away in Hoogezand.

Local attractions

This is a lovely area for pottering around on bikes or on foot – routes start directly from the site, taking you to nearby lakes, nature reserves and villages. The Drentsche Aa National Park is about 15 minutes’ drive/45 minutes’ cycle away for more trails through forests, heathland and sand drifts, with some rare flowers and ancient dolmen to spot along the way. When it’s time to dip into city life, take the 15-minute drive/half-hour bus ride to Groningen to explore this arty, student-filled city. Here you can wander around the Old Town, take a cruise on the canals, climb the Martini Tower and admire the contemporary art in the Groninger Museum. There are, of course, lots of great places to eat and drink too. If you’ve got kids to entertain, take a look at places like the fairytale-themed Sprookjeshof Zuidlaren (15 minutes’ drive) and Drouwenerzand Attractiepark (half an hour), or perhaps take older ones to learn a bit of history at Kamp Westerbork (40 minutes). Hoogezand’s National Bus Museum is worth considering too.
