It's free, quick and easy!
- Island site in a North Netherlands nature reserve
- A ten-minute drive from Leeuwarden
- Pool, lakeside beach, play area and restaurant
On an island, in a lake, on a North Netherlands nature reserve… ja, all is mightily scenic at Camping De Kleine Wielen, in the nature and recreation area of Friesland's De Groene Ster.
As the site is on an island, you'd be right in reckoning that watery activities are all around: try boating, kayaking, swimming and more from here, as well as casting off in the calm lake waters. Fishing accessories and bait can be easily hooked on site.
On land, have at it at pondside walking and cycling, forest wanders, meanders through the Friesland grassland and placid pedals all the way around the reserve, or city days in Friesland capital Leeuwarden, a ten-minute drive away or a quick ride on the bus that stops 300 metres from the site.
All is nicely set up for lazy days loafing around sitewards too, with a pool for dips and a lakeside beach for tan topping up; a play area, and, in high season, a kids' club and entertainment and evening shows for all. Friesland food? Also sorted with no need to drive while you're on hol: De Kleine Wielen has its own restaurant/snack bar, and a mini market selling fruit, veg and other essential foodie bits.
De Kleine Wielen also has a washing-up area, four toilet blocks with showers, and gas cylinders for sale.

Local attractions
Active hols, peaceful days and city day tripping are easy to access from Camping De Kleine Wielen, even if you want to leave the car behind and get about by bus, foot or pedal.
Watersports including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, rowing and canoeing are easily sorted with the site's position right on the lake, and its setting is close to several hiking trails to small Friesland towns and villages like including Hindeloopen, Dokkum and Stavoren: take the foot or cycle ferry to the city of Enkhuizen from this last, and from there onto the sailing town and seventeenth and eighteenth buildings of Medemblik.
And if staying in these parts, one must must have a day in Leeuwarden, the handsome Freisland capital with tiny scenic streets, over 615 historical monuments, old town centre with the towering spire of the Church of St. Bonifatius, and – simply splendid – the wonkily leaning tower of Oldehove, which lists to an angle greater than the famed wonky tower of Pisa.
Leeuwarden's also a place of many museums and lively nightlife too – go here and see why it was voted European Capital of Culture for 2018.
