  • Family-friendly Friesland site with peaceful waterside location
  • Directly across the water from De Alde Feanen National Park
  • On-site marina, bike hire, fishing and watersports
Fancy dipping your toes into a Friesland holiday? Located directly opposite De Alde Feanen National Park (paddle straight over or drive 30 minutes by road), Camping en Jachthaven De Veenhoop is a splendid spot for nautical folk and those looking to spend a bit of time out in natural surrounds. As it's got its own marina, guests can explore their surroundings by boat, try their hand at fishing or simply relax by the water's edge. This peaceable spot is a super spot for families looking for plenty of fresh air. Kids may be intrigued by the small menagerie of animals that frolic, cluck and sniff their way around site (including resident dogs Haye and Hylke), and they're also welcome to gallivant around the spacious green fields or head to the play area. There's plenty for bigger kids and grown-ups too: watersports and bike hire are available on-site for those seeking active times, while for those looking for quieter days can venture off-base to one of several nearby nature reserves. Alfresco cookouts can be had here (barbecues and campfires are permitted) and fresh sandwiches can be picked up at reception between Monday and Saturday if you're after a light bite (pick up a newspaper to peruse while you're there if you wish). And though the site may be out in the sticks, other eats aren't far away: there's a restaurant a couple of minutes' walk away in De Veenhoop, and Drachten has a range of supermarkets, snack bars and eateries 15 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions

De Alde Feanen National Park (accessible by boat or with a 30-minute drive) is a good place for all manner of outdoor pursuits: birdwatching, cycling and sailing are the three biggest draws. Newcomers should start by heading to the visitor centre to get their bearings and find out what's on. There are other nature reserves within striking distance too, such as Kraanlannen (15 minutes on foot) and De Deelen (a 15-minute drive). These both have cycle trails, and the whole area is easily accessible on two wheels. As a reward for all such activities, a dip in a fab open-air pool (with waterslide) is an easy 10-minute drive away. On the hunt for wilder beasts? Aquazoo Friesland (30 minutes' drive) has a range of critters, displays and adventure playgrounds for the kids. The park is just outside Leeuwarden, the handsome waterside capital of Friesland that's home to several museums about local traditions, ceramics and the art of brewing beer (tasting strongly encouraged).
