What’s your fave watersport? Sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding, windsurfing? Actually the answer doesn’t matter too much, for all are right there on site for guests at Friesland’s fab Recreatiepark Marswâl. This is a truly super spot, right on the banks of the Slotermeer – handy for those who’d like to spend endless days indulging in their water-based activity of choice or have a crack at a bit of everything. And what if your favourite lake activity is ‘relaxing while others do all the work’? That’s a possibility too, as there’s a sandy beach area that’s splendid for sunbathers and small sorts – the roped-off swimming area means they’ll not be able to stray too far from the shallows. A break from the water’s probably a good idea now and then, if only to dry off and avoid prune-like skin. Fill the hours between lake dips with games of tennis, taking the kids to the playground or hiring bikes to pedal off on the quiet cycle paths that criss-cross this (pleasingly green and flat) area. For supermarket shopping and pancake feasts, bike to Balk in five minutes or so; if that seems a little far flung, meals and drinks can be had by strolling over the road to a lakeside restaurant. Barbecues are permitted for those who love a bit of cooking over coals, and there’s plenty of space to get all the necessary kit set up on the generously-sized pitches.

Local attractions

Many a happy day can be spent biking through the surrounds here, gadding about in Gaasterland’s woods and meadows. Or perhaps you’d prefer a bit more power, in which case you may like to join one of the moped tours heading out from Balk. Either way, at some point you’ll want to wend your way to the Wyldemerk (20 minutes’ cycle from the site), a woodland lake so densely populated with colourful critters it’s been designated the country’s first dragonfly reserve. Golfers can tee off at a course 10 minutes’ drive away, while those with a penchant for winter sports will want to head to the ice skating museum 25 minutes away in Hindeloopen to get the lowdown on the country’s top pastime for chilly days (as well as seeing all sorts of other museum bits gathered from around Friesland). The 40 attractions and bargain prices at Sybrandy’s Speelpark (15 minutes’ drive) makes it a top pick for those looking to entertain kids. Budding engineers might also like to take in a trip to the UNESCO-listed D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station (15 minutes) – even folks not immediately enthused by such a prospect may well find themselves fascinated by the inner workings of the world’s biggest steam pumping station.
