It's free, quick and easy!
- Eco-friendly and family-friendly site in spectacularly scenic Twente
- A five-minute drive from Hengelo and 15 minutes from Enschede
- Bike hire and bike route maps, kids’ play area and stargazing
In the scenic Twente landscape of Overijssel, between the cities of Hengelo (five minutes’ drive) and Enschede (15 minutes), is Mini Camping Twekkelo, a family-friendly site that brings together the calm quiet of the countryside and the convenience of urban centres.
It’s the former that guests will be taking most advantage of on site, as this is a site with an eco-conscious focus. As well as a natural playing field for kids to run about on (with a trampoline and sandpit, and room for volleyball and badminton too) and a willow-tree hut for adventures, the site owners follow an ethos of separating waste, and are sure to keep the site dark overnight – cutting down on electricity use and making it a prime spot for stargazing.
When explores push beyond the site’s boundaries, the pretty countryside is crisscrossed by hiking trails devised by the local community, which guests can follow through meadows and over hand-built bridges. On top of that, there are of course plenty of biking routes within easy reach of base, and bikes can be rented and a bevy of route maps can be borrowed from site.
There’s a small food shop on site if self-catered stays are being cooked up, and plenty of restaurants in Hengelo and Enschede if they’re not. Washing up can be a social affair too: with three sinks to choose from, clearing plates becomes a great way to meet the neighbours. A fridge for guests’ use completes the washing-up area, so feel free to stock up on supplies ahead of arrival.

Local attractions
Plenty of nearby attractions are entirely within walking or cycling distance: the site is a kilometre and a half from the stunning Het Stroot estate, a two-minute walk from the picking garden and rail-bike rest point at Het Plukreef, half a kilometre from a paintball arena, and just under a kilometre from the kid-friendly rides at Attractiepark de Waarbeek.
Stays hereabouts certainly ought to include explores of the two oh-so-handily located cities of Hengelo and Enschede too. Start with Hengelo (five minutes’ drive) for its museums, cinema and Kasteel Twickel, then move on to Enschede and its art gallery, museums, casino, partially submerged clock tower, and Grolsch brewery.
The site’s also just 15 minutes from the German border, so make the most of that Schengen Area open travel by crossing over into Deutschland on trips to Nordhorn (35 minutes), Ahaus (30 minutes), Gronau (25 minutes) and the famed thermal spa town of Bad Bentheim (35 minutes).
For more gently active stays closer to base, it’s 10 minutes from base to the nearest golf course, and 15 minutes to swimming, surfing and hiking at Recreatiepark Het Rutbeek.
