  • Peaceful Montenegro campsite on a family wine estate in Bandici
  • Podgorica 20 minutes’ drive; Ostrog Orthodox Monastery 45 minutes
  • Restaurant and meal delivery service; wine and rakija tasting
Whether you’re travelling north to Montenegro’s Dinaric Alps, south to the Adriatic coast or just really fancy the idea of sightseeing in Podgorica, Purple Eye Estate - Camp and Winery is a handy place to make your base for all sorts of outings. It’s easily accessible for overnight pit stops, being five minutes’ drive from the main road, and set in spectacular countryside 20 minutes’ drive from the capital city for longer stays. Part of a family wine estate in the sleepy village of Bandici, the tree-shaded pitches are a few minutes’ stroll from Matica Creek and Purple Eye Lake. If you’re yearning to get out and about exploring the local area, you can rent bikes, go horse riding or hiking directly from your pitch. Canoes can also be hired for paddles on the lakes. When you’d rather relax on site, simply fix up a coffee to enjoy on the spacious terrace or balcony, and maybe pick a fresh fig from a nearby tree for breakfast. The owners can organise tastings of top-quality wines and rakija (local grappa) from their vineyard, or the sampling of organic foods from their gardens and farm. They can also deliver your breakfast, lunch or dinner (for an extra charge and if ordered in advance), and there are a couple of green restaurants within walking distance. Beside wine tasting and lots of eating, there’s a large outdoor area for relaxing, playing table tennis, football or volleyball with the kids and enjoying the peaceful mountain surroundings. Facilities on site include hot showers and an alfresco kitchen with cooking utensils provided.

Local attractions

Head up into the mountains to admire the dazzling white facades of Ostrog Orthodox Monastery (45 minutes’ drive), built into a sheer cliff face in the 16th century and famed for its caves glittering with religious mosaics. Almost as spectacular are the far-reaching views over Bjelopavlici Plain from the terrace in front of the monastery. Surrounded by jagged limestone peaks, Lake Skadar National Park (40 minutes) is a top destination for birders, who may get to see Dalmatian pelicans and pygmy cormorants, egrets and eagles. Hiking trails lead up into the mountains to abandoned monasteries and fortresses, or you can hire kayaks for paddles on the lake itself. Podgorica (20 minutes) has lots of Soviet architecture to see, including the concrete, bunker-like Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus. Catch modern art in the Contemporary Art Museum in Park Petrovica, go shopping for souvenirs along Vučedolska Street and wind up your visit to the city with a strong coffee in Njegošev Park.
