  • Quiet camping in Sigulda, latvia
  • Turaida Castle 15 minutes’ drive; Gauja National Park 45 minutes
  • Picnic areas, communal kitchen; barbecues allowed; firewood for sale
The name of the site tells you all you need to know (or, at least, a lot) about the location: Lakeside Camping Sigulda sits on the banks of Lake Matinu and a five-minute drive from Sigulda, a pretty town about an hour’s drive east of the Latvian capital Riga. False advertising, this certainly isn’t. This peaceful, family-friendly place draws people keen to partake in water-based activities: the lake is a popular spot for refreshing dips in the summer months, and the site has a number of paddleboards for hire. They will also organise waterfront picnics for you, supplying everything (including flowers and candles for a romantic ambience) except the food, which you can source at a well-stocked supermarket a five-minute drive away (or a 20-minute walk). In addition to sheltered picnic areas, there is a kitchen with a communal freezer, kettle and washing-up area, and wood is sold on site – whether you need it for a barbecue or a campfire. Showers, toilets and charging facilities complete the picture. The surrounding landscape runs from woodlands to orchards, and you and your dog (a welcome guest here) can explore it at your leisure. There’s also plenty to do in Sigulda town: the sandy beach on the Gauja river is popular for sunbathing and swimming; you can also join in a game of volleyball (there are several riverside courts). Those with a head for heights might like to go on the Ferris wheel, which gives you far-reaching views of the forested surrounds. And if that’s not quite high enough, there’s also a cable car linking the banks of the river, not to mention several outfits arranging hot-air balloon rides.

Local attractions

If you’re in need of some cardio, Fischer Slēpošanas centrs (10 minutes’ drive) is a ski resort that stays open year-round, with forested trails for mountain biking and Nordic walking, plus a paved track for skating and running. They also hire much of the equipment needed for a sports day, from roller skates to helmets. With its red-brick architecture, the 13th-century Turaida Castle (15 minutes) stands proudly on a forested hilltop overlooking the Gauja river. In addition to historic and artistic displays, you can visit its grounds, which include traditional buildings (such as a sauna) with workshops and ethnographic exhibitions. Latvia’s biggest and oldest national park, Gauja National Park (45 minutes) is famed for its rocky landscape with cliffs and cave systems. A hike along its forested trails might yield encounters with wildlife such as deer and wild boar, plus beavers on the watercourses.
