  • Peaceful, family-friendly forest site 300 metres from the Gauja river
  • A 20-minute drive to the sea; 45 minutes to Riga/Gauja National Park
  • On-site canoe tours, sauna, go-karting, fishing and bike hire
A river, trees and a close-by Baltic breeze – this site just outside teeny Iļķene is pretty sure to please. Leiputrija Camping is set in a fab location – you'd never guess from the serene surrounds, but this peaceful Ādaži spot has easy access to two major motorways, so it’s a cinch to explore top Latvian attractions like Gauja National Park, coastal towns and historic Riga. There's much to see and do in the immediate vicinity, too, particularly for those who like messing about on the river. This is first-rate angling country, with the fish-filled waters of the Gauja river a breezy 300-metre stroll away. Site-organised canoe and kayak tours also come highly recommended. There are also plenty of reasons to hang around on site: facilities here include a tourist information desk, a kiosk for snacks and ice-creams, bike rental and a traditional Latvian sauna. This site is about as kid-friendly as they come: the playground, play pond, pedalos and go-karting course should allow the small sorts to slide, splash and zoom about to their heart's content.    Guests who fancy alfresco dining can hire a firepit or barbecue; there's also a sizeable picnic area to lounge around in when the weather is fine (bread is delivered every morning for fresh sarnies). Those looking for further supplies can source them at a well-stocked supermarket 15 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions

If you fancy giving the car a break, you're in luck: half of Latvia's landmass is made up of natural ecosystems that can easily be explored on foot or on two wheels. To get a taste for the local area, head to route 10 (directly opposite the site entrance), a car-free highway for hiking and biking. This trail links the capital city Riga to Gauja National Park, a vast expanse of spectacular hinterland wilderness (45 minutes' drive). If you're heading for the coast, make sure to call in at two fab seaside towns nearby: Carnikava (20 minutes) has a tourist information office and several swimming spots, while Saulkrasti (30 minutes) is home to spectacular white dunes and a bicycle museum. For further outdoor adventure, guests can tee off at a top-tier golf course (40 minutes). Looking to mix things up? Head to the city lights of Riga (45 minutes) for walking tours of the Old Town, Art Nouveau buildings, a covered market and oodles of history (Soviet, medieval, maritime and more). Riga Zoo (40 minutes) is also high on many travellers' lists (particularly those touring these parts with young kids in tow).
