  • Stay on a working farm 15 minutes’ drive from Pistoia city centre
  • Top spot for summer and winter breaks: beaches, skiing within an hour
  • Less than an hour from Florence, Pisa and Lucca
If spending your hols behind the wheel doesn’t sound like your ideal getaway, you’re in luck: at Agricamping Podere Campofossato, a family-friendly farm site less than 15 minutes’ drive, or 20 minutes on a bus, from the centre of the Tuscan city of Pistoia, you won’t have to do any driving at all (unless you really want to). Podere Campofossato ticks all the boxes of a city-country break. There are plenty of rural excursions near the peaceful site, but you still won’t have to go far to get your urban fix: a bus stop just a minute’s walk from site will bring you right into the centre of Pistoia, and you can use the city as a jumping off point for trips to Florence, Lucca and Pisa. Slow things down even further by trotting on over to the nearby stables for a leisurely ride around the foothills of the Apennines (though you may have to drive to get there – you can’t win them all). Back on site, you can work up an appetite with a game of tennis or five-a-side before firing up the barbecue for dinner. Luckily, you won’t have to travel far for supplies: grab some olive oil made right on the farm (ask the owners for a tour of the mill) for marinading, and keep that barbie stoked with firewood you can buy on site. Fancy a break from cooking for yourself? There are loads of restaurants to try within 20 minutes of Podere Campofossato.

Local attractions

Start your stay at Agricamping Podere Campofossato by heading into Pistoia. If you only have time for a few things you should target the stunning churches (Pistoia Cathedral has a silver altar), the art museums or the underground tunnels. You can get the best of both worlds here – as well as being close to cities (Florence, Pisa and Lucca are each around an hour away), there are plenty of green areas to dive into. The trails, tracks and wild animals of Monteferrato Natural Protected Area and the Aquerino nature reserve are both within 45 minutes of the site. Whether you prefer winter or summer getaways, you’re all set up at Podere Campofossato: you’re about an hour from the ski slopes at Abetone and the beaches at Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi and Versilia. The kids needn’t get fed up of traipsing around after you. Bring them to see the exotic animals (who doesn’t love red pandas and tigers) at the Pistoia zoo, 20 minutes from the site, then head to the scenic village of Collodi where you can explore the literature-inspired Pinocchio Park and flit around the Garzoni Garden and Butterfly House.
