  • Peaceful site a half-hour’s walk from Marzamemi, on the Sicilian coast
  • Noto 20 minutes’ drive; Modica and Syracuse 40 minutes
  • Swimming pool and bar; bike rental; shuttle from Catania airport
Sun, sea and beach – you can have them all (granted – the sun is not 100 per cent guaranteed, but this is south eastern Sicily, so your odds are good) at Sunseabeach Camping, on the outskirts of the small village of Marzamemi, 40 minutes’ drive south of Syracuse. Relaxation is the name of the game at this family-friendly site. Stretch out lazily on a sun lounger by the side of the pool (complete with a palm tree-dotted shallow area for toddlers) and visit the adjacent kiosk bar to have your drinks topped up – and repeat until sunset, when the sky comes alive with spectacular colours, or until hunger strikes. A bar serves local food and pizza, plus a range of local wines, and there’s a mini market for any bits and bobs you might want to put on the barbecue. With its fishermen’s cottages and pretty squares decorated with colourful ceramics (not to mention a couple of gelaterias), Marzamemi village is well worth a visit; it takes about half an hour to walk to the main square, or you could drive there in five minutes, but the best way to go from A to B is by bike or e-bike, both of which you can hire on site. The site also runs a shuttle service to the nearest beach (if you want to move independently, it’s 15 minutes’ walk away or a five-minute bike ride); there’s also a shuttle service to and from the airport of Catania, so you don’t have to worry about bus schedules or expensive taxi rides.

Local attractions

The town of Noto (20 minutes’ drive) is known for its Baroque architecture, including the splendid 18th-century cathedral, with two twin towers (one housing a bell, the other a clock); Nicolaci Palace, its balconies supported by extravagant statuary – from winged horses and lions, to mermaids and other characters; and Palazzo Astuto, with its wrought-iron balconies. Modica (40 minutes) is another key destination for fans of Sicilian Baroque. An imposing staircase leads to the ornate façade of the Cathedral of Saint George, dating from the 1730s, while the Church of Saint Peter has a marble floor and a frescoed ceiling. Modica is also famed for its chocolate production, so check out the Chocolate Museum and stock up on goodies with a high cocoa content. The origins of Syracuse can be found on the island of Ortygia. Here layers of history include the ruins of a Greek temple dedicated to Apollo (dating from the 6th century BC); the ancient Arethusa Spring, a basin skirted by papyrus plants; and the spectacular Piazza del Duomo, anchored by a Baroque cathedral.
