- Simple rural touring site 15 minutes’ drive from Ispica in Val di Noto
- Santa Maria del Focallo Beach 10 minutes’ drive; Noto half an hour
- Spacious pitches planted with olive trees, macchia and prickly pears
Countryside calm with Mediterranean beaches just down the road. Yep, you’re headed for Ciriga Base Camp, 15 minutes’ drive from gorgeous, UNESCO-listed Ispica in south-east Sicily’s Val di Noto. Imbued with the tranquil atmosphere of Sicilian countryside, this compact touring site on a two-hectare estate has pitches surrounded by prickly pears, olive groves and Mediterranean macchia vegetation.
The local beach is Spiaggia di Santa Maria del Focallo, 10 minutes away by car; its fine sands are backed by dunes and pine forest. A popular hub for wind- and kitesurfers, it also has a scattering of lido beach clubs and cafés. If you’re keen to dodge the cooking during your stay at Ciriga Base Camp, there’s also a couple of laidback eateries within walking distance.
This peaceful site is something of an ever-evolving project, where spacious pitches are currently kitted out with outdoor showers, washing-up sinks and picnic tables, but no electric hook-ups or driving water. There is, however, a service point and a non-potable water supply.

Local attractions
There’s plenty to do on the coast as well as the hardcore watersports at Spiaggia di Santa Maria del Focallo (10 minutes’ drive), which also has shallow waves for novice and young swimmers. A 40-minute walk along the Val di Noto coastline takes you to Punta Ciriga, and rewards with dramatic sea stacks, cute coves (great for snorkelling) and sea-carved rock arches.
There are more awesome sea views at Portopalo di Capo Passero (25 minutes), from where you can wade across to the minute Isola di Capo Passero when the tide is low. Close by, the Isola delle Correnti (half an hour) sits just off the coast at the point where the wave-tossed Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet.
You wouldn’t want to miss the UNESCO-listed town of Ispica (15 minutes), with its ornate baroque basilicas and churches, and art nouveau Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte. If you’ve a yen for more baroque architecture, Noto (half an hour) comes up trumps with elegant pink-stone edifices living the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. For more local heritage, head to Marzamemi (25 minutes), a seaside village – and once a tuna fishery – renowned for its picture-perfect piazzas, artisan shops and waterfront restaurants.
