- Quiet site with stunning views 10 minutes’ drive from Niscemi, Sicily
- Gela beaches half an hour’s drive and Piazza Armerina 40 minutes
- Tennis court, swimming pool and massages available for an extra cost
Set amid wild flowers and lush greenery, and with spectacular views to the Mediterranean Sea in the distance, Camping Torotto sits in the hills above Niscemi in Caltanissetta, south-west Sicily. This peaceful spot may seem remote but is handily close to golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear seas at Gela (half an hour’s drive), the lush forests of the Orientata Sughereta di Niscemi Natural Reserve (15 minutes) for hiking, and lovely baroque-styled towns like Ragusa (about an hour) for sightseeing.
On the practical side, the grass pitches all have optional electric hook-ups and lighting for finding your way around after dark. Free facilities include loos, showers and a laundry room; the tennis court, swimming pool and sundeck, massages in the spa, and the communal barbecue are all available for guest use at a small extra fee per person per day.
If you’re running short of anything, source supplies at supermarkets in lively Niscemi (10 minutes). When the shopping’s done, make a beeline for pavement cafés on Largo Duomo or Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, two photogenic squares where you can while away time surrounded by handsome baroque architecture.

Local attractions
When a day at the beach is called for, head off down to Gela (half an hour’s drive), where you can stroll the seafront promenade or hang out in stylish lidos offering parasols, loungers and good food. If you want to escape the crowds, you can do just that at quiet Pezza Fico beach (also half an hour), which has dunes to stroll and shallow water for safe swimming.
One of the biggest draws in this corner of south-west Sicily is the ancient hillside town of Piazza Armerina (40 minutes), with its 14th-century castle, imposing Duomo and a labyrinthine web of cobbled streets lined with atmospheric trattorias and café. It’s perhaps best-known for the renowned Villa Romana del Casale (45 minutes), where the displays of intricate mosaics date right back to the Roman Empire.
If you’re in search of more Sicilian history, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ragusa (about an hour) calls with its soaring baroque-era cathedral and its banks of soft-pink cottages, churches and mansions tumbling in a photogenic manner down the hillside.
