  • Over 30 hectares of pine forest with direct access to a sandy beach
  • A minute's walk from the biggest adventure park in southern Italy
  • Snack bar, terrace, playground, shop and 3km of woodland trails
What an absolute stunner. Roam around the region or stay close to base at this Apulia site near the sea – either way, you’ll want to book for at least a couple of weeks. Sandy days and forest days are easily sorted at the splendid family site of Amici Della Natura: its Taranto province setting is in a pine forest right by the Ionian Sea coast – and with direct access to a sandy beach with clear waters (the water is shallow too, making this a prime place for very small guests). When you want to wander the woodland, over three kilometres of trails await around the pine forest’s 30 hectares. Beaches are all around this handsome coastline; if you are indeed on hol with the tiddlers they’ll likely also clamour for a day at Torremattoni, the biggest adventure park in southern Italy. (And if the tiddlers are the type who are a tad impatient in cars, parents will be most pleased to note that the theme park is a mere minute’s stroll away.) For roaming around the region, Amici Della Natura is between Apulia and Basilicata on Italy’s ‘instep’, 55 minutes’ drive from province capital Taranto. Facilities on site include a playground (if kids have any energy after Torremattoni) and a snack bar to have everyone thoroughly fed and watered during days at the beach or on the sizeable terrace. There’s also a food shop, and barbecues are allowed.

Local attractions

Beach first? Adventure park first? Decisions, decisions… As the kids might make the decision for you, you might be at the adventure park first… Torremattoni is a splendid place for a family day, with treetop routes at varying levels to suit ages from toddler to adult; there are 13 routes in all, along with over 100 games along a one-kilometre route. Beach next, and then out and about around Apulia and the region… options include the famed and fab troglodyte settlement of Matera 50 minutes' drive away, home to an ancient hamlet thought to represent one of the first human settlements in the country. Matera’s old centre of Sassi makes up part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site: go see. It’s worth making the drive to Pollino National Park, Italy’s biggest at 1,925.65 square kilometres and covering swathes of beech and pine forest, rivers and streams and the Pollino and Orsomarso massifs making up some of the southern Apennine mountains. Once there, there are wildlife and birds including deer, otters, wolves and golden eagles to spot, towns to potter around and many archaeological sites such as Chiaromonte and the Castrovillari castle to see. The closest visitor centre for the park is at Morano Calabro, an hour and 45 minutes’ drive from Amici Della Natura.
