Have a merry time in Molise at Maronda Camping, a site with things to do by the bucketload. Activity seekers can go from partying at the open-air nightclub and vying for the winning spot at organised competitions to lining up games of ping pong on their trip to this park just off the Adriatic Sea. For equally absorbing ways to while away your time on hols the park has bowls, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts as well as a games room that’s especially popular with the young ones. Drop off kids here or in the play park then launch into a novel borrowed from the library while basking under the shade of the tamarisk, bohemian olive, oleander and poplar trees on site. Or mosey on over to sit on a deckchair at the private pebble and sand beach. If all that lazing makes you hungry, a restaurant and pizzeria with a woodburning oven is ready and waiting for when it’s time to refuel. And what’s an Italian hol without an aperitif (or five) at the bar beforehand? Post-tipple, intrepid adventurers can make the most out their surroundings, whether they want to stay close by fishing in the Trigno river right next to the park or head a little further afield. Il Pontile in the pretty Marina di Vasto is a 10-minute drive away for short hill walks rewarding roamers with views over the whole Gulf of Vasto and La Sirenetta, a postcardworthy beach with clear waters, is another five-minute trip up the coast by car.

Local attractions

Set in Campobasso’s small seaside locale of Marina di Montenero yet far from road noise and edging a golden beach, Maronda Camping’s setting is more than a smidgen serene. Its surrounding region of Molise is a place of villages on steep slopes and wild hills stretching inland to the mountainous Abruzzo National Park a two-hour drive away. On your way to this landscape that’s a favourite of lake lovers, stop in Agnone an hour from site to ring in the day with a look at the historical bells in the Giovanni Paolo II museum. Or cavort at the coast east of Maronda Camping instead: Gargano National Park and its beaches are an hour’s drive. You can also make your way to Rodi, one of the gateways to the turquoise waters of the Tremiti Isles, an hour and 20 minutes from the park. If town trips closer to home are more your thing, Termoli is worth walking around with its colourful houses, narrow alleyways and mosaic-lined cathedral set inside old fortifications. Go to the Belvedere Tower for views of the harbour, then top off your day trip with a bit of beach time at Rio Vivo...
