Local attractions
The small seaside resort Marina di Camerota within easy reach of the site (just under a kilometre away) has been going strong since the mid-18th century, on a splendid spot around 15 minutes' drive from Palinuro and just under two hours south of Salerno.
This is a land of lush vegetation and award-winning beaches with clear and clean water, hailed in recent years for its gay-friendly vibe. Along with Venice's Jesolo, Marina di Camerota is the only Italian settlement to have a beach officially designated for naturism: if the thought of tan lines makes you shudder, this is the sandy spot for you.
For day trips and regional adventuring, the surrounding Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes the ancient towns of Velia, 45 minutes away; the Padula Charterhouse, an hour and 10 minutes, and Paestum, within an hour and 15.
