A German holiday on the banks of a forest-fringed lake? Go on, then… Wiesensee Camping is a quiet, family-friendly site right on the reservoir of the same name, in the lush setting of the Westerwald region, in the west of the country. This is a pretty spectacular area in terms of hikes and other outdoor pursuits. Obviously, the proximity to the lake is one of the site’s key benefits: picture yourself stumbling out of your accommodation in the morning, and being within spitting distance of its waters, whether you want to go for a refreshing swim, launch your paddleboard or hire a pedal boat. If you prefer non-water-based activities, the 18-hole course of Golf Club Wiesensee is a five-minute walk from the site. Travelling with your faithful four-legged companion? Oh, there are some excellent treats in store for you (and them), including them being able to swim with you in the lake (head to the beach at Pottum, on the north-eastern corner of the lake) and occasional relaxed training workshops. The site has a playground and a TV room, plus amenities such as a launderette (and a drying room), a well-maintained toilet and shower block (including facilities for disabled guests) and a washing-up area. There’s also a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and a beer garden, and more dining establishments can be found on the banks of the lake or in the nearby towns of Pottum and Westerburg (both five minutes’ drive).

Great site manager! Spacious pitches in a quiet meadow, good walks. Facilities okay but a bit dated for some. A few had booking issues or found the drained lake disappointing.

Liked Maurice war super nett und hilfsbereit. Wir kamen einen Tag später als geplant und er offerierte uns darum eine extra Tag. Da wir weiter mussten, konnten wir das Angebot leider nicht annehmen.

Liked Stellplatz eben auf einem Wiesengrundstück.
Der Platzwart Thomas war immer freundlich und hilfsbereit und zur Stelle, wenn man ihn brauchte.

Disliked Leider war der Platz sehr laut, da zum einen bis nachts gegen 2:00 Uhr im See-Caffee Party mit einer Band war, wovon Thomas leider nichts wusste. Auch von der Männerzeltgruppe, die direkt neben unserem Platz war und bis ca. Mitternacht aktiv waren, war Thomas wohl nicht unterrichtet. Sehr schlechte Kommunikation zwischen Besitzer, bei dem gebucht wird und Platzwart. Leider war auch im Vorfeld bei der Buchung nicht klar ersichtlich, daß der See, wie ich ihn aus meiner Jugendzeit kannte, abgelassen ist und nur noch ein wuchernder "Wiesensee" ist.

Liked The host is very welcoming and polite. Check in with all the campers that they have everything they need. He also let us check in earlier. You have electricity free of charge, shower is €1 but still good value for money.

Liked Thomas ist mit Abstand der freundlichste und bemühteste Plazwart den es gibt.
Ständig bemüht das Camper zufrieden sind und alles haben . Spielt mit den Kinder u d so vieles mehr .

Disliked Leider ist der Platz etwas in die Jahre gekommen und könnte etwas aufgefrischt werden . Leider liegt der Wiesensee trocken was den Behörden geschuldet ist .

Unter anderem lag dies auch an der Organisation des Aufstellens. Wir werden ein neues System dafür etablieren und hoffen, darin besser zu werden. Inwiefern waren die Duschen und Toiletten schlecht?

Liked Sie haben den bestmöglichen Plan aufgestellt, da es keine verfügbaren Campingplätze gab, um die gemachte und bestätigte Buchung einzuhalten.

Disliked Der Campingplatz wusste nichts von meiner Ankunft und hatte keine Plätze frei. Der Platzwart (Thomas) hat sich echt ins Zeug gelegt, um mir einen Platz vor den Dauercampern zu organisieren, und hat Verlängerungskabel verlegt, damit ich Strom hatte.
Ich blieb nur die erste Nacht auf einem provisorischen Platz abseits der Straße auf sehr unebenem Boden.
Entweder gab es ein Missverständnis zwischen Pitchup und dem Campingplatz, aber das war nicht das, was ich aufgrund der Buchung und der Beschreibung der Anlage erwartet hatte.

Local attractions

Holzbachschlucht (10 minutes’ drive) is a nature reserve with a circular trail snaking through a lush forest for about three kilometres. Listen out for warblers and kingfishers as you find your way to a gorge punctuated by small waterfalls. Then climb up to the Sonnenkanzel observation deck for sunset views. Limburg an der Lahn (half an hour) has a pretty medieval town centre (Altstadt) with cobbled lanes and half-timbered buildings. Cross the stone Alte Lahnbrücke bridge for an Insta-worthy shot of the distinctive Romanesque cathedral, then head to LIMPARK for assorted activities including paintball, laser tag and go-karts. Sitting at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle (a point marked by the Deutsches Eck monument), Koblenz (55 minutes) is home to the monumental Schloss Koblenz, an 18th-century palace with elegant riverfront gardens. Accessible by cable car, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress hosts cultural events and tours.
