Ever been to the Eifel? Adventurers, you surely should. The mountain range sprawled over Germany's west and Belgium's east is a haven for hiking, cycling and other outdoor adventuring, filled with peaks and hills, several volcanic lakes and reservoirs and rivers by the dozen. And as you'll hanker after a well-equipped base to retreat to in among all that? Meander along to the Eifel region's Vodatent at Camp Kyllburg for restful days in a peaceful setting – and loads more to do around the grounds if you're still up for some action. (If not, use the free library exchange and/or stake your spot in a sunny corner of the restaurant terrace.) Vodatent at Camp Kyllburg is half a kilometre from the town of Kyllburg, on the Kyll river. It's a family site with a huge amount of stuff to do for kids, from splashing in the outdoor pool to mountain biking and playing around the grounds, or sorting football, tennis, hut building and playground sessions. All ages have free entry to the Freibad Kyllburg less than 50 metres from the site, where there are pools, a diving board, waterslides, a playground, beach volleyball and a huge sunbathing lawn. This is very much fishing territory too, with fly fishing available on either side of the Kyll; sort your fishing permit (as well as pool access, firebowl hire, timber sales and bike and canoe rental) at the Camp Kyllburg reception.

Local attractions

The Eifel has waterways galore, many suitable for fly fishing (the only type of angling allowed in the region). The team can help with arranging excursions to the best Eifel fishing spots; if you'd rather cast off on your own, a drive of 20 minutes will take you to trout angling at Bitburg Reservoir. The reservoir is also home to several hiking trails and a five-kilometre path around its shores, and is a startoff point for the hiking network of the German-Luxembourg Nature Park. Rowing, paddleboarding, surfing and pedalo boating are all available on the water. For towns and cities, Bitburg-Prüm capital Bitburg is within 20 minutes; Germany's oldest city Trier within 45, and Cochem, hailed by the Kyllburg team as an absolute must, within an hour and five minutes.
