Planning to spend days bathing, hiking, cycling, fishing, sailing or jogging around the landscapes of the Black Forest? They're all easily done from a pitch at Campingplatz Kirnbergsee. This site is quietly based between meadows and the forest and, rather fabulously, it’s also on the shore of the Kirnbergsee lake. That means you’re free to take as many dips as you like from the gorgeous natural beach – the water here is very clear and inviting… This spot is far away from any noise and stress, as it's in a lovely Black Forest location and 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Unterbränd. It’s quite dreamy for outdoorsy types – there are plenty of options for activities around the local area. Hikers and cyclists in particular often find Campingplatz Kirnbergsee to be a great starting point, prepping for the day using the site's modern bathroom facilities and grabbing some food from the handy restaurant. There’s a friendly team here who will be happy to point you towards other attractions, whether it’s the several outdoor pools nearby (including the huge pool and spa complex in Titisee-Neustadt, 10 minutes’ drive away) or the riding centre 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

You may well spend a fair amount of time in, on and around the lake just by the site, but if you’ve still got an appetite for more water-based time there are several other lakes close by that are worth a visit. Titisee (25 minutes’ drive) is one such spot, with activities including swimming, boating, climbing and tobogganing – but you should also make time to get over to Lake Constance (55 minutes) to have a look at the largest lake in Germany. Keeping to dry land, you may like to take on one of the excellent hikes at Wutach Gorge (20 minutes), a spectacular 200-metre-deep canyon, or take a stroll around the pretty town of Donaueschingen (15 minutes), on the eastern edge of the Black Forest. For a bit more of an adrenaline kick, try the rides of Europa-Park (an hour and 25 minutes), which also has gentler attractions for the kids. Looking to expand your horizons a little further? You can head over the border to Switzerland with a drive of 35 minutes or so, or get to Liechtenstein or Austria in a couple of hours.

Liked: Beautiful area, very scenic and good area for tents (flat ground) the showers were an excellent temperature and both the showers and toilets were very clean. Lots of opportunity to see and hear wildlife. Great area for walkers, dog walkers, and little explorers (children)

Disliked: Difficult to find someone at reception, although I’m sure they were busy maintaining such a beautiful site
The cafe wasn’t open much, so I wouldn’t rely on it for food out of season

Disliked: We pitched the tent, went out to the local town when we got back we found someone had nicked 10 tent pegs so the tent was flat on the floor. Luckily I carry extra pegs.

Liked: J’ai passé seulement une nuit dans ce camping. J’ai énormément apprécié. L’endroit très calme et agréable avec les sanitaires très propre. Si j’ai envie d’y aller balader à nouveau dans le coin. Je sais d’avance ou je peux dormir.

Liked: Really lovely site with friendly staff. Excellent facilities - the toilets and showers were immaculate and regularly cleaned. Good kitchen on site too with a small table and stoves available to use. Freezer to re freeze freezer blocks and dish wash area too. Lovely food from the on-site restaurant and fresh bread and croissants available to order from here the night before too. Overall really nice location with gorgeous lake to swim in and walk around and for those feeling more adventurous, hiking into the local town is possible.

Disliked: Just a small thing to note about translating signs into English as we got caught out by drinking water from the kitchen that was non drinking water but we hadn’t translated the sign so didn’t realise!
