  • Small lakeside Dombes campsite five minutes’ drive from Sandrans
  • Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne 10 minutes’ drive; Lyon 50 minutes
  • Swimming pool, bike hire and 12-acre fishing lake on site
A location on a private wooded estate among the Dombes wetlands – nicknamed the ‘land of a thousand ponds’ – and with its own 12-acre fishing lake on site… now, doesn’t that just sound like a place that should have a distinctly laidback atmosphere? A properly chilled-out ambience is indeed what you’ll get at Paradis des Dombes, a family-friendly site about five minutes’ drive from the sleepy village of Sandrans in the Ain department. This tree-shaded haven of peace is thoroughly conducive to relaxation: there’s an outdoor pool for swims and sunbathing, and the terrace restaurant serves up simple cuisine made from local produce. If you’d rather sort the catering yourself, barbecues are permitted on site, and there are picnic tables liberally dotted around on the lawns. There’s plenty of active stuff to do too, should you be so minded, with swings and climbing frames in the playground and a bouncy castle for younger children, plus pétanque courts, volleyball and badminton nets and a ping-pong table for active sorts of all ages. If you’re keen to explore the watery hinterland of the campsite, you can borrow bicycles from reception and head off into the (conveniently flat) countryside. There are also walks along largely traffic-free rural lanes – particularly handy for exercising any canine companions you may have brought along.

Liked: Nearby walk around a large pond with good bird life

Disliked: The site is tired and has fallen into disrepair. You can tell that it was formerly more impressive. Now, less than 50% of the toilet block was functional; the showers barely heated up; the down pipe was missing from the guttering, meaning water was dripping freely from the roof; the pitches were uneven; and separating hedges were unkept.

From the manager: Hi, Thanks for your review. Please note that I am the new owner and many repairs have been done to prepare this first season such as the solar heater that was not working so far. Unfortunately didn't have time to fix everything but I ensure you 100% of the facilities will be working next year as the two toilets blocks that are closed. There is no down pipe on the guttering as it has been designed so. indeed water is collected in a lost well (without pipes) to end in the lake.

Yes lovely people who run it , toilets , showers clean. Unfortunately…

Liked: The host was very nice

Disliked: Toilets and showers were filthy. No toilet roll. No toilet seats. Some toilets were literally a hole in the floor. Poor facilities Far too expensive what it is / facilities

From the manager: Hello, thank you for your feedback. We do not understand your negative opinion, especially regarding the cleanliness of the toilets for which we more often have compliments!! Indeed, the toilets are cleaned daily and checked several times a day. It can sometimes happen that some people leave the toilets very dirty after their visit. It is recommended in these cases to let us know. Kind regards,

Stopover, friendly staff. Didn’t eat at restaurant heard good reports

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked: Quiet and local campsite, with small but clean pool. Good showers, and had a bar and restaurant with excellent burger and fries, and excellent choice of beers and draught. Staff and owner were very friendly and very welcoming to our party of three males on two motorbikes.

Disliked: Most of the toilets were closed, and there was no toilet roll available. Tent pitches were all overgrown and the grass and hedges needed a good cut!

Local attractions

Walks and bike rides can take you out into the surrounding countryside directly from the site, and the area also has options for things like horse riding, golf, hot air balloon rides and tree-climbing adventures (for these, head to Vanciaventure, 35 minutes' drive away). Gentle strolls around local towns and cities come highly recommended too. Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne (10 minutes' drive) has a gorgeous medieval core that’s wonderful to explore on any day – but it's particularly excellent on Saturday, when the market rolls into town. Medieval Pérouges (25 minutes) is another nice place for a wander – as, of course, is Lyon (50 minutes), with its Roman ruins and plethora of places to eat. If you're into your wines, you’ll also probably want to take a trip to Beaujolais (half an hour), where several vineyards and wineries are open for tours and tastings. Kids on holiday with you? Bird Park Villars-les-Dombes (15 minutes) is probably a better option…
