  • Family campsite bordering the Ardèche River in the Bouches-du-Rhône
  • Pont Cassé river beach five minutes’ walk; Avignon 50 minutes’ drive
  • Swimming pool, games library, bar, restaurant and essentials store
Tucked neatly into a meander on the Ardèche River, Camping Mas Sud Ardèche is a small and family-centric Bouches-du-Rhône campsite on a massive plot of private land, with bags of space for family fun and sporty activities. Your first port of call on arrival should be reception to pick up basic essentials if you’ve forgotten anything, and order fresh bread for the morning (anything else can be found in the shops at Saint-Just, five minutes’ drive). Other handyman-site facilities include a pristine bathroom block right next to reception, with a laundry area and washing-up sinks. Fridges can be rented to keep perishables like cheese cool during the day (and ensure your white wine stays nicely chilled). The terrace restaurant is open from morning until night for breakfast, day-long snacks and dinner. Here you can catch up with the Tour de France and the football results as you dine, or borrow games from the toy library in the adjoining bar, where there’s also a darts board and ping-pong table. You can look forward to mingling with other guests at the Wednesday night cocktail parties (in July and August only). Night owls will be pleased to hear that there’s a special bar area to move to if things get a bit lively after 11pm; please use this seating to avoid disturbing fellow campers late at night. Kids have their fair share of fun too, what with zooming down slides into the inflatable pool, playing on swings or mastering volleyball down on the river beach. Organised activities for all the family in peak season include guided visits to the Ardèche gorges and various outings on Friday evenings.

Local attractions

Who needs the seaside when there’s a river beach right next to the campsite? The sandy strip at Pont Cassé (five minutes’ walk) has a supervised bathing area on the Ardèche River in summer. To see something of the dramatic Ardèche gorges (half an hour’s drive), paddle a canoe through soaring canyons between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (40 minutes) and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche (five minutes), or admire the spectacular chasm from the viewpoint at Belvédère des Templiers (25 minutes). Continue your exploration of the Bouches-du-Rhône’s natural landmarks with a tour of the prehistoric wall paintings in the Chauvet Cave near Vallon Pont d’Arc (40 minutes), or scale Mont Ventoux (an hour and 20 minutes) for views into Provence. Alternatively, go hiking in the wild hills and valleys of the Cévennes (an hour). For urban jaunts, you might like to spend a day in Avignon (50 minutes) visiting the stunning Palace of the Popes and Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral, or head for Orange (half an hour) and scramble up the Colline Saint-Eutrope stairway to the hilltop Roman Theatre. Montélimar (45 minutes) is a pretty town where the kids can play with interactive exhibits in the Palace of Sweets and Nougat.
