  • Family-friendly site among hundreds of kilometres of cycling trails
  • Pretty gypsy caravans with heating and outdoor furniture
  • Pool, snack bar and bar
One really should bring one's wheels if staying in Les Roulottes du Travers's part of the Ardèche. (And one's camera/charged-up smartphone aussi, but that's sort of a given in most parts of the Rhône-Alpes.) Near the tiny commune of Ajoux, Roulottes du Travers is a peaceful and family-friendly campsite with gypsy caravans and a laidback look. It's among the hundreds of kilometres of greenways this part of France is famed for, and thusly is a first-rate place in which to use your wheels: sports car, bike and motorbikes owners will all find this a mighty good landscape to try. (Have a look through the site pics to see owner Kees on his bike among some smashing local scenery.) Not wheely sporty at all? Settle down by the Roulottes du Travers pool with a cold drink from the site bar, which also serves up tasty meal using fresh local produce. Plenty of facilities and amenities are to hand on site, including toilet blocks with showers and a washing-up corner. There's also free wifi throughout, for staying in touch with the world, obs, but also perhaps for posting wheely boastful and scenic pics up on your Facebook…?

Local attractions

After a few days out and about on whatever form of wheels you prefer, make some/much time to investigate the history of the region at its old châteaux and other buildings and its towns and villages. The nearby city of Aubenas is probably best known for its 14th-century château (now the town hall) housing collections of paintings and sculptures; also have a look at the 16th-century Gargoule house next to it, the Saint Laurent church, and the 17th and 18th century Saint-Benoît cathedral. The old villages of Vesseaux, Ucel and Saint-Privat are also well worth a look. Another top option is the city of Privas, an excellent spot for excellent walks as it has easy access to both the Rhône valley and the Ardèche gorges. It's also famed throughout France for its marron glacé and for its chestnuts: the cracking chestnut festival in autumn has a market with nutty products including pasta, bread, liqueur, flour and sausages, along with a mammoth chestnut roasting in the town centre where visitors can try roasted nuts and local wine – for free.
