It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly La Couronne site two minutes' walk from the beach
- A 20-minute drive from Martigues and 35 minutes from Marseille
- Shaded playground, snack bar and summer family activities
You might be tempted to suggest that it bodes well on the scenic surrounds front that the location scouts from TF1’s comedy series Camping Paradis landed upon this area when seeking out a gorgeous beachy backdrop for their series...
And you’d be correct – a quick flick through the pics confirms that the coastline around La Couronne (known as the Côte Bleue, for fairly obvious reasons) is indeed very easy on the eye. It’s easy on the foot, too, for folk at Camping du Pascalounet, as there’s a splendid beach just a couple of minutes’ walk away, with rocky areas for clambering as well as plenty of sand to stretch out on between swims in the calm waters.
This region claims a whopping 300 days of sunshine per year, so it’s likely you’ll be able to spend much of your time outdoors: away from the beach, the site has a pétanque court, table tennis and a shaded playground. Kids’ activities run throughout the summer, and there’s a chance to strut your stuff at the weekly family-friendly dance parties or channel your competitive streak into games night.
Naturally, eating is another excellent outdoor activity, and you can do so easily by heading to the snack bar for quick meals, drinks and ice creams out on the terrace, or picking up fresh bread and pastries for an alfresco petit dejeuner.

Local attractions
It’s sensible to allocate a fair chunk of your stay to that gorgeous beach, but also worth leaving a little bit of time for further Côte Bleue exploring. There are several other small beaches along the coast, and plenty of watersports – try Cap Couronne for boat hire and jetskiing, or Sausset-les-Pins (10 minutes away) for scuba and snorkelling trips.
More of the coastline can be seen on boat trips from Marseille, half an hour away by car. Visit the islands of If and Frioul or scoot along to see the limestone calanques (cliffs and creeks) south of the city. There are also some fab museums in town if you’re in a land-dwelling mood: try the history museum or the eclectic new MuCEM.
Up in Martigues, 20 minutes away by car, there’s much ambling to be done around the harbour, along the canal paths and around the town’s baroque churches. Just outside the town is Parc de Figuerolles, on the banks of the huge Étang de Berre, where you can roam on nature trails, ride the carousel and meet friendly farm animals.
