- Outdoor pool, play area and bowling alley; café and take-away service
Can’t decide between a peaceful woodland retreat, an active holiday with lots of mountain hikes or a lakeside break where you can indulge your passion for watersports? Agonise no more, because at Camping l'Amandier, in south-eastern France, you can have all three in one splendid, family-friendly package.
Surrounded by the spectacular nature of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, the tree-shaded site sits at an altitude of 900 metres. Take a few deep breaths, fill your lungs with fresh mountain air and decide on which trail you’ll explore first… perhaps the Col des Garcinets (15 minutes’ drive)? Adrenaline junkies might prefer to have a go at the Via ferrata de la Grande Fistoire (15 minutes), or drive past the famed hairpin bends of the Tourniquets de Bayons to the Cascade Forest Lacour waterfall (25 minutes), for a spot of canyoning.
Watersports enthusiasts can lug their gear to the Lac de Serre-Ponçon reservoir (20 minutes); if you don’t have your own equipment, the Base Nautique Port Saint Pierre (45 minutes) hires paddleboards, kayaks and pedalos.
On the other hand, you might just want to relax with a drink by the on-site outdoor pool, or have a picnic by the stream that marks the border of the property. The kids, meanwhile, can tire themselves out in the play area or in the bowling alley.
At dinner time, you can start the barbecue – try the village of Bréziers (five minutes) for provisions – or order a takeaway. The site has a washing-up site, as well as a toilet and shower block.

Local attractions
On the banks of Lac de Serre-Ponçon, the Muséoscope du Lac (20 minutes’ drive) illustrates the history of the dam and the villages that had to be submerged for its construction in 1955. The observation point has far-reaching views over the reservoir and surrounding forested hills.
At La colline des Lutins (45 minutes), children can take part in activities such as gold panning, treasure hunts and sensory trails. They can also meet farmyard animals, go on pony rides and help to feed the resident rabbits and goats.
The boulder-strewn basins at the Gorges de la Méouge (50 minutes), on the outskirts of the Parc naturel régional des Baronnies provençales, are the spot for a refreshing swim on a hot day. You can also crawl under small waterfalls, or, if you feel energetic, there are hiking and mountain-biking trails. Be sure to keep an eye out for hang-gliders flying overhead (they take off from Montagne de Chabre, just a few kilometres away).
