  • In the grounds of an old water mill on the banks of the Gartempe river
  • A 10-minute walk from Saint-Savin; 45 mins' drive from Futuroscope
  • Fishing on site; public open-air pool a five-minute walk away
An old water mill on site – how very splendid. Indeed, as its name may suggest, Camping du Moulin de la Gassotte is in the grounds of a historic mill, with a hectare and a half of partly shaded space on the banks of the Gartempe river. That old mill once supplied the Vienne town of Saint-Savin, 10 minutes’ walk from the site. These days life mainly works the other way round, with the town keeping guests sorted for shops, restaurants and things to see and do (including the UNESCO-listed 12th-century abbey, and the waterslides of the open-air public pool, both within a few minutes’ walk). The riverside setting’s not just there for decoration; it also means that guests can set out on canoe trips or settle in for fishing days (once they’ve bought a permit from reception, that is). Watery views make a pretty backdrop for a picnic too; the site has a playground on hand to amuse nippers who tire of taking in the scenery. Want to see inside the mill? Of course you do – and you’re most welcome. Part of the ground floor of the old building has been converted into a sociable common room with TV, a library and tables and chairs; it’s also the best place to log on to the free wifi to plan outings and adventures.

Local attractions

Surely you’ll have to start with a stroll to the centre of Saint-Savin to see the 12th-century murals that have earned the town’s abbey the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like what you see? Set off to see more of that sort of thing on the Valley of Frescoes trail, a route that links a dozen local monuments that sport murals dating from the 12th century to the 19th. Taking in more of the area’s history might involve a trip to the pretty village of Angles-sur-l’Anglin (15 minutes’ drive) or setting off for Chauvigny (15 minutes) to mosey around its medieval streets and take a tour of the ruined castles on a hill just outside the town. Or perhaps you’d like to look more to the future? If so, the multimedia installations, spectacular shows and thrill rides of Futuroscope are 45 minutes’ drive away. Keeping things in the here and now is a possibility too: there’s plenty of life to see at La Planète des Crocodiles (25 minutes’ drive) and Monkey Valley (an hour).

Power optional grass site

Liked: A gem of a campsite in the grounds of an old mill. We only stayed one night, out of season, so it’s difficult to say what it would be like in high season. But for us it was wonderful. Very helpful reception staff, pitch up where you want. Level pitches, very clean toilets complete with piped music! Within walking distance of the town, which itself is stunning complete with abbey and bars and restaurants. Would definitely stay there again.
